Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks was taken into custody in Scottsdale, Arizona in the early hours of Friday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence. The arrest added an unwanted off-court development to what has already been a difficult stretch for the veteran forward, who has been sidelined for nearly two weeks with a broken hand.

Brooks was pulled over just south of Thunderbird Road on Scottsdale Road around 1 a.m. following reported traffic violations that included reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit. Officers placed him under arrest roughly 30 minutes after the initial stop and transported him to Scottsdale City Jail for booking. He was released from custody by approximately 3:30 a.m. and described by those present as cooperative throughout the process.

Brooks and the details that emerged after his release

The nature of the suspected impairment became a point of discussion after Brooks was released. Reports indicated the arrest was not connected to alcohol but was instead related to marijuana, a distinction that shaped how the situation was being interpreted in the hours that followed. Brooks was released without being formally charged, and the question of whether charges would ultimately be filed was left in the hands of the city prosecutor’s office.

Officers on the scene noted a strong odor inside Brooks’ vehicle consistent with cannabis. During the arrest process, they were also mindful of his existing hand injury, taking care to avoid aggravating it while placing him in restraints. The consideration was a small but telling detail in what was otherwise a straightforward booking and release.

What this means for Brooks and the Suns

Brooks has been one of the more important additions to Phoenix’s roster this season, his first with the Suns. Before going down with the hand injury, he was averaging a career-high 20.9 points per game, establishing himself as a primary scoring option and a vocal presence on the floor. The injury had already cost him nearly two weeks of playing time, and the arrest introduced a new layer of uncertainty around his situation.

The Suns acknowledged the incident through a brief organizational statement, confirming awareness of the situation and noting that the team was in the process of gathering more information. No further comment was offered beyond that acknowledgment.

Whether the city prosecutor moves forward with charges will determine how significant the legal dimension of this story becomes. For now, Brooks remains in a holding pattern, sidelined physically by injury and navigating a legal process that has yet to reach a resolution.
