What did Marvel show at D23 for Avengers: Doomsday, and is it actually new. Marvel Studios brought back the same special look trailer that first played at San Diego Comic Con in July, this time unveiling it on the D23 stage with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell standing right there to introduce it. The film hits theaters Dec. 18, and the footage leans hard into Downey’s Doctor Doom, confirming he hails from Earth 828, the same reality tied to the Fantastic Four.

Is Doctor Doom finally getting his moment?

The Doomsday clip opens with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm warning the assembled heroes that Doom isn’t just lost, he’s broken. From there it cuts to Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards confronting Doom in a pile of rubble, then to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor squaring up with Stormbreaker in hand. Doom blocks the strike, blasts Thor with green energy and then raises an army of Sentinels, the classic X-Men villains repurposed here as Doom’s own weapon. It is a loaded sequence, and it is designed to make Downey’s return feel like an event rather than a cameo.

Why are fans arguing about a trailer that already leaked once?

Here is the part that got buried under all the excitement. This same footage played exclusively in Hall H at Comic Con weeks earlier, so D23 wasn’t really a reveal, it was a rerun with better staging. That detail is fueling a real split online.

Some fans are all the way in, with reactions calling the teaser fire and counting down to December. Others are less convinced, with one person online admitting the whole thing felt oddly empty even though they couldn’t explain why. Part of that skepticism traces back to timing. The first Doomsday trailer dropped right around Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a film built on practical effects, and the contrast made Marvel’s heavy CGI stand out for the wrong reasons this time around.

What surprises came out of the D23 stage beyond the footage?

Hugh Jackman crashed the panel through a video message, half joking that he wanted in on the cast and dragging an off screen Ryan Reynolds into the bit for good measure. Evans and Atwell also teased their own return, poking fun at how close Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter came to a real ending in Avengers: Endgame before getting pulled back in. It’s the kind of moment that plays well in a convention hall and reminds everyone how stacked this cast has become.

Who else shows up in Avengers Doomsday?

Doomsday’s roster is enormous even by Marvel standards. Alongside Downey, Evans, Atwell, Pascal, Hemsworth and Kirby, the film brings back Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Letitia Wright, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston and Simu Liu, while introducing the X Men side of the roster through Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Channing Tatum. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Doomsday pulls heroes from three separate universes into one collision course against a threat none of them have faced before.

Does the reused footage actually hurt the movie’s chances?

Probably not in any way that matters by December. Recycled trailers happen constantly in blockbuster marketing, and the bigger signal here is that Marvel is still leaning entirely on Doom’s presence to sell a movie this size. Whether that bet pays off depends on whether the finished film gives Downey more than a villain entrance, because a trailer built on spectacle only carries a franchise so far before audiences want the story underneath it.
