No institution in the HBCU landscape is having a more defining moment than Howard University. In the span of just a few months, the Washington, D.C.-based university has stacked milestone upon milestone — cementing its reputation not just as a leading HBCU, but as one of the most dynamic universities in the entire country.

The numbers, the rankings, and the championships all tell the same story. Howard is not simply keeping pace. It is setting the standard.

Howard Earns the Forbes No. 1 HBCU Title Two Years Running

Howard University was recognized by Forbes as the top HBCU in the nation for the second consecutive year in its 2026 America’s Top Colleges rankings. The list evaluates institutions based on graduate earning potential, student debt levels, return on investment, and long-term career outcomes.

LinkedIn also named the Washington, D.C.-based institution the top HBCU in the country, citing the university’s ability to set graduates up for long-term success — measuring job placement rates, senior-level roles, undergraduate internships, and alumni entrepreneurship.

What makes this recognition so significant is what it represents beyond the rankings themselves. The historically Black institution is producing graduates who lead industries, build companies, and shape policy at the highest levels. The dual recognition from two of the most respected platforms in career and education reinforces the school’s value.

Key reasons Howard topped both lists include:

  • High graduate earning potential across all economic backgrounds
  • Strong return on investment for students receiving financial aid
  • Exceptional job placement and senior-level career outcomes
  • Alumni entrepreneurship rates that outpace peer institutions

Howard Makes History as the First HBCU With R1 Research Status

Perhaps the most seismic achievement in Howard University’s recent run came earlier this year. The university became the first HBCU to receive the prestigious Research One (R1) Carnegie Classification, placing it among the nation’s most elite research institutions — a status fewer than 150 universities nationwide have achieved.

The R1 designation is reserved for institutions demonstrating the highest levels of research spending and doctoral degree production. For the Washington, D.C.-based institution, it is a validation of decades of investment in academic infrastructure, faculty talent, and scientific inquiry.

Howard University faculty helped lay the foundation for artificial intelligence, launched the first HBCU doctoral program in mathematics, and are today pioneers in quantum computing and data science. The R1 status opens the door to even greater research grants, more competitive faculty recruitment, and a stronger platform for the next generation of scholars.

The implications stretch far beyond the university’s campus. Higher education experts note that this achievement may inspire and pave the way for other HBCUs currently pursuing the same designation.

A Historic Basketball Sweep Not Seen Since 1992

On the court, Howard delivered a moment that stopped the entire HBCU sports world in its tracks. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams captured MEAC Tournament titles in the same season — the first time that accomplishment has been achieved since 1992, sending both programs to the NCAA Tournament.

The men’s program claimed its third MEAC Tournament title in four years, beating North Carolina Central 70-63 — controlling the game through toughness, depth, rebounding, and composure under pressure.

The sweep is a statement about the depth of Howard’s athletic culture. This is not a program riding a lucky streak. It is a program that has built a winning identity on both sides of the bracket, reinforcing that Howard competes — and wins — at the highest levels available to HBCU athletics.

Highlights from the historic sweep include:

  • Men’s team earns its third MEAC title in just four seasons
  • Women’s team captures the MEAC crown in the same tournament weekend
  • Both programs earn automatic bids to their respective NCAA Tournaments
  • First time Howard has achieved the men’s and women’s double since 1992

Howard’s Legacy Is Bigger Than Any Single Milestone

Each achievement Howard University earns in 2026 does not exist in isolation. It builds on more than 150 years of purpose-driven excellence. Founded in 1867, the institution has trained a majority of the physicians, dentists, and pharmacists who served underrepresented communities throughout the 20th century, while its alumni have shaped public policy and civic leadership around the world.

The university’s current momentum — from research dominance to athletic glory to career outcome rankings — reflects an institution fully aligned across every dimension. Academic prestige, athletic excellence, and graduate success are all moving in the same direction at the same time.

The institution leads the nation in producing graduates with professional doctoral degrees, operating 14 schools and colleges that offer 140 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs.

For students considering where to invest four of the most important years of their lives, the 2026 run sends an unmistakable message. The university is not just one of the best HBCUs. It is one of the best universities — period.
