Jadeveon Clowney returns to Houston and now it gets really scary

Jadeveon Clowney is heading home. The veteran pass rusher has agreed to sign with the Houston Texans, the franchise that selected him first overall in the 2014 NFL draft, completing a reunion more than seven years in the making.

Clowney, 33, confirmed the deal, noting that the decision was an easy one and that money was not the primary factor, a statement that carried weight given that other teams had made offers. He had visited the Cleveland Browns last week before ultimately choosing Houston, where he still lives.

He spoke about the opportunity to contribute in a different way than when he first arrived in the league as a heralded top pick, saying he has grown significantly as a player and as a person since last appearing for the Texans in 2018. He described wanting to help younger players and to bring leadership across what has now become a decade-long career at multiple franchises.

What Clowney adds to an already formidable front

The Texans did not need edge rush help in the conventional sense. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter combined for 27 sacks last season and both earned All-Pro recognition, with Anderson landing on the first team and Hunter the second team. The defensive front was already one of the better pass-rushing units in the AFC.

Adding Clowney changes the dimension of that group rather than simply supplementing it. He led the Dallas Cowboys with 8.5 sacks in 2025, one off the career-high he set earlier in his career. His numbers with Dallas understated his impact. Across 13 games and six starts, he was credited with 41 tackles, a team-high 12 tackles for loss, 33 pressures, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and four pass deflections. His sack production also improved significantly in the second half of the season as he built continuity within the defense.

A career defined by movement and resilience

Clowney’s path from top pick to journeyman pass rusher and back to his original team has been marked by injuries, contract disputes and sustained productivity despite the disruptions. The Texans placed the franchise tag on him in July 2019 before trading him to Seattle, receiving a third-round pick, a pass rusher and a linebacker in return.

Since leaving Houston, he has played for Seattle, Tennessee, Cleveland twice, Baltimore, Carolina and Dallas. Clowney has accumulated 66.5 career sacks and remained productive enough in his early thirties to draw interest from multiple teams each offseason.

Last season with Dallas told a particularly useful story about his current condition. Clowney did not sign until mid-September and spent his first five games with limited snaps and limited production. His playing time share increased significantly over his final eight games, and he looked like a different player, suggesting that his best performance came when he had had time to build into a season and into a defensive system. That information matters for how the Texans might use him.

The homecoming and what it means

Returning to the city where he played his first five NFL seasons carries meaning beyond football. Clowney was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Texans and earned second-team All-Pro recognition during his original stint, establishing himself as one of the most dominant defensive players of his era when healthy. The Dallas season showed he can still be productive deep into a schedule.

Houston enters the season with a defensive front that could now be among the deepest in the NFL. Pairing Anderson, Hunter and Clowney gives the Texans three legitimate threats off the edge, creating rotation depth that defensive coordinators will have to account for on every snap.

For Clowney, the return is a chance to win the kind of game he said he has been chasing, one he described as requiring leadership alongside talent. He knows the organization. He knows the city. He has not won a Super Bowl. That combination of familiarity and unfinished business appears to be precisely what made this an easy cal
