Jalen Duren contract and a teammate’s deal

Detroit center Jalen Duren agreed to a five year, $200 million fully guaranteed deal on Thursday night, ending a standoff that had run four months and into the opening days of training camp.

Did the terms change?

No, and that is the notable part. The deal he accepted is the same five year, $200 million offer he declined two weeks ago. Earlier offers during the summer had ranged from $170 million to $190 million, so the team did move substantially across the process, just not in the final fortnight.

Then why did it take until Thursday?

Because the dispute was not only about money. Reporting indicates his representatives felt the process was disrespectful, particularly set against how the team handled a teammate’s extension earlier this month, a five year rookie scale deal worth $155 million. He also objected to weight clauses included in some earlier offers. Those are terms and treatment rather than totals, and they explain why the same figure was acceptable in October and not in September.

What was the deadline?

A one year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that expired Thursday night. Accepting it would have made him an unrestricted free agent next summer with full control over his destination. No player who has made an All-NBA or All-Star team has ever taken that route, which indicates how much short term money it costs.

Why would anyone consider it?

Leverage. A qualifying offer trades a guaranteed nine figure contract for one season at a fraction of the value in exchange for unrestricted freedom afterward. It is a threat that works precisely because teams know a player might actually do it, and the Jalen Duren contract was settled hours before that choice had to be made.

What is Detroit getting?

A 22 year old coming off the best season of his career, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 65 percent shooting across 70 games as the team took the top seed in the East. The shooting percentage is the number that justifies the price.

What is the concern?

The playoffs. His production fell sharply, to 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds on 51 percent shooting across 14 games, with Detroit eliminated in a Game 7 of the conference semifinals. A drop of that size from a player whose value rests on efficiency near the rim is the argument against the contract, and it is why the negotiation was contested rather than routine.

How did the team handle it publicly?

By holding the line and saying so. Detroit declined to engage with sign and trade proposals throughout, and the president of basketball operations maintained publicly that a deal would be reached. The head coach and the team’s lead guard both expressed support at media day and said they had stayed in contact over the summer.

What happens now?

He joins a team that has already begun camp, having missed media day and the first practices. Detroit hosts Phoenix in its first preseason game on Monday.
