MONACO — Tennis fans, brace yourselves. The man sitting atop the rankings is officially putting his racket away for the rest of 2026.

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner announced Tuesday that he will miss the remainder of the season as he continues to deal with an injured knee. If you’ve been wondering when the Italian star would be back on court, the answer is now officially next year.

A summer high, then silence

Rewind to July. The 25-year-old was on top of the tennis world, beating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final to successfully defend his title at the All England Club. It looked like the start of a dominant second half of the season.

Instead, that championship match turned out to be the last time he’d play all year. He later pulled out of the US Open because of an injury to his right knee, and his return date kept sliding further down the calendar.

Sinner hits the reset button

In a video message posted to Instagram, Sinner said that he and his doctors had decided he needed a course of treatment for the knee, which brings his 2026 campaign to an official close. He added that he’s thinking about the long-term future of his career and plans to do everything he can to come back at full strength.

His management team backed that up in a statement, saying that, on the advice of his medical staff, he will undergo treatment for inflammation in his knee. The team said it chose to start the treatment now so he has enough time to recover before preparations for 2027 begin.

Smart move or painful sacrifice? Probably a bit of both. Sometimes the best way to win the long rally is to step off the court for a while.

The tournaments he’ll miss

He had already withdrawn from the upcoming Shanghai Masters. Now the Paris Masters and November’s ATP Finals are off the table too.

The toughest blow for Italian fans? He won’t be able to play for Italy at the Davis Cup Final 8. Italy is hosting the event and enters as the three-time defending champion, so losing its biggest star is like a home team benching its MVP right before the playoffs.

The silver lining: If he’s healthy at the start of next year, he could be ready for the Australian Open, the next Grand Slam on the calendar, which begins Jan. 17.

The No. 1 ranking is up for grabs

Here’s where things get spicy. With the top-ranked player sidelined for months, his grip on the No. 1 spot is now at risk.

Enter Zverev, who has won two of this year’s four Grand Slam titles and is closing in on the top ranking. After falling to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, the German could end up getting the last laugh in the rankings race.

Then there’s Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner’s main rival, who knows a thing or two about time away from the tour. The Spaniard missed 4½ months this year because of a right wrist injury.

A season of highs and lows

For all the frustration, the Italian’s 2026 had plenty of brilliance. He has five Grand Slam titles to his name and strung together a 30-match winning streak this year. That run came to a screeching halt at the French Open, where he had a meltdown in a second-round loss amid a Paris heat wave.

Now the focus shifts from trophies to recovery. The tour will look a little emptier without him over the next few months. But if Sinner comes back healthy and hungry in Melbourne, the rest of the field might want to enjoy the break while it lasts.
