A man who worked on the security detail of Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett was shot and killed by Dallas police officers Wednesday night following a tense standoff at a children’s hospital in the city.

The incident began around 11 p.m. when officers from the Dallas Police Department’s fugitive unit tracked the man to a parking garage at Children’s Medical Center Dallas while serving an active warrant. The suspect locked himself inside a vehicle and refused to come out, forcing officers to deploy tear gas in an effort to end the standoff peacefully.

When the man eventually exited the vehicle, he pointed a firearm at officers. Police opened fire, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the confrontation. The suspect did not fire his weapon at any point.

Who was the Crockett security suspect

The man had not been publicly identified by police as of the time of reporting. He reportedly went by multiple aliases, including the name Mike King, and had built a reputation managing teams of security officers at several downtown Dallas hotels and at his church.

What made his case particularly alarming was the nature of the warrant that led officers to him. He was wanted for impersonating a law enforcement officer, a charge connected to his alleged practice of claiming to be a police officer while recruiting workers for his security business, which placed off-duty officers in various roles.

Authorities also noted that he drove a vehicle designed to resemble an unmarked law enforcement car. The license plates on the vehicle were allegedly stolen from outside a military recruiting office, adding another layer of concern to an already troubling profile.

The Crockett connection

The suspect had worked directly on Crockett’s personal security detail, accompanying her in both Washington, D.C., and across Texas. He reportedly provided protection during campaign events connected to her run in the Democratic Senate primary, a race she ultimately lost to James Talarico.

His role was not a minor one. He is said to have overseen entire security teams, giving him significant access and responsibility tied to a sitting member of Congress. The revelation that someone in that position was operating under false pretenses and allegedly impersonating law enforcement raises serious questions about the vetting process for personnel in such sensitive roles.

Crockett, who represents a Dallas-area district and has been one of the more outspoken progressive voices in the House, has not yet made any public statement regarding the incident.

What comes next

Dallas police have not released additional details about the ongoing investigation into the suspect’s background or the full scope of his alleged impersonation activities. The case is expected to draw further scrutiny given the suspect’s proximity to a federal lawmaker and the circumstances surrounding his death.

The standoff and its aftermath serve as a stark reminder of the complications that can arise when private security operations intersect with public figures, law enforcement, and unverified credentials.
