Jaxson Dart got away with the scramble but not what came after it

Jaxson Dart scored a rushing touchdown at Giants training camp on Tuesday, then tossed the ball into the helmet of the nearest defender on his way back to the huddle. That decision cost his team 15 yards and ended the first-team offense’s work for the day.

After scrambling left and running untouched into the end zone, Dart threw the ball at the helmet of cornerback Greg Newsome. The ball struck Newsome’s helmet and bounced away. Multiple defensive players converged on him as he walked back toward his teammates, and the incident drew an immediate reaction from the sideline.

Harbaugh assessed it as a taunting penalty, backed up the extra point attempt, and made the offense kick from 48 yards. The kicker made the longer attempt. Harbaugh said no additional conversation with Dart was necessary, noting that the consequences made the point clearly enough.

Other players in the vicinity described it as competitive heat rather than a serious breach, with a teammate characterizing it as the kind of edge you want in a quarterback, particularly in pads during a live red zone drill where points and pride are both on the line.

A productive period undermined by the moment

The incident came at the tail end of a positive stretch for the first-team offense after a difficult start to the session. The Giants had struggled to find the end zone earlier in practice before Dart connected with tight end Isaiah Likely for a score in a red zone drill. The scrambling touchdown followed immediately after, and it was on the heels of that score that the celebration went too far.

The Giants’ offense has been working through early-camp growing pains that go beyond individual moments of competitive excess. Penalties have been a persistent problem in the first two padded practices. The team was flagged 14 times on Monday, nine on offense. Tuesday saw improvement, with seven penalties including the taunting call.

Most of the infractions have been pre-snap violations as the Giants build their cadence rhythm with the first-team offense. Getting that communication right is a priority for a team giving Dart significantly more first-team repetitions than he received in his first year in the system.

Dart’s personality on the field

Tuesday’s incident was consistent with a competitive and feisty approach to the game. Playing with an edge has generally been treated as an asset at the quarterback position, and the tight end’s comment that he is the type of player you want reflects how some teammates are processing the moment.

Newsome, on the other side, has his own reputation for competitive play, and the tight end noted that the cornerback would not be the type to let the moment pass without a response, which is largely what happened.

The quarterback was not available to speak with reporters after practice, leaving his side of the specific exchange undocumented for now.

The bigger picture for the Giants

New York is counting on him as its long-term answer at quarterback, and this training camp represents a meaningful step in that development. More snaps with the first team creates more opportunities for both growth and the kind of moments that provide coaching lessons of their own.

Dart’s taunting call was the kind of teachable situation that training camps are partly designed to produce. The consequence was a longer extra point. The lesson, delivered by the penalty and the absence of any additional words from the sideline, is that celebrating in a way that puts your team in a worse position is not the kind of competitor’s edge that serves anyone.

The Giants practice again Wednesday, and the red zone work that produced Tuesday’s best moments and worst moment will continue.
