Jayden Daniels and the final play confusion

Washington had the ball, the field position and a reliable kicker waiting on the sideline. What it did not have, it turned out, was a plan for the final seconds.

The result was one of the strangest finishes of the NFL season, and quarterback Jayden Daniels says the blame starts with him.

What went wrong at the end of overtime?

The Commanders and New York Giants played to a 27 to 27 tie on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, in Landover, Maryland, after Washington let the clock expire before it could attempt a winning field goal.

Running back Rachaad White carried for 2 yards to the Giants’ 24 and was tackled with 50 seconds left. Washington had no timeouts. By the time the offense snapped the ball, only 12 seconds remained.

Jayden Daniels dropped back as three tight ends and receiver Trey Burks ran routes. Instead of throwing the ball away to stop the clock, he turned upfield, tucked the ball and was tackled for no gain with eight seconds to play.

Jayden Daniels and the offense could not line up to spike the ball in time. Kicker Drew Stevens never got the chance to try a field goal of 42 yards.

Who took the blame for the Jayden Daniels play?

Both the quarterback and his head coach accepted responsibility. Jayden Daniels said the offense needed to know the situation and stop the clock, and he called the mistake his own.

The head coach said the call was designed as an outside throw to tight end Ben Sinnott. He admitted no one told the quarterback to spike the ball, because the staff was still trying to gain more yards. He said the team did not need them and that the decision to clock it should have come from him.

He added that the team practices late game situations every Thursday. Teammates said those drills include centering the ball in the middle of the field to set up a kick.

How did players and fans react?

Frustration spilled over quickly. A top receiver called the ending unacceptable, and several players said the tie felt like a loss.

Guard Sam Cosmi kicked a pylon in the end zone on his way to the tunnel. The head coach stood near the 25 as players left the field.

Even one of the team’s minority owners voiced disbelief on social media, saying Washington only needed to kick the field goal to win.

A Giants defender said the Commanders looked confused and slow to reach the ball, while the opposing coach marveled that few would ever see a finish like it again.

How did Jayden Daniels play in his return?

Before the final snap, his comeback had looked like a success story. The game was the first for Jayden Daniels since he dislocated his left elbow in Week 2.

On the last drive, he completed three passes for 35 yards and scrambled for another 16. That march began after Washington forced a fumble by Giants running back Cam Skattebo at the Washington 24 in overtime.

Washington also held a lead of 14 points in the fourth quarter, up 27 to 13 with just over 11 minutes left, before New York rallied to force overtime.

What is next for the Commanders?

The tie leaves Washington with one win, three losses and a tie. Next up is a Monday night trip to face the San Francisco 49ers.

For Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, the lesson is painfully clear. Knowing the clock matters as much as moving the ball, and one missed spike just turned a likely win into something that feels far worse.
