Jonathan Greenard PUP listing raises questions about Eagles defense

Jonathan Greenard will begin Eagles training camp on the physically unable to perform list after sustaining a pectoral strain while lifting before camp opened. The team characterized the injury as a short-term setback and expressed full confidence that the veteran pass rusher will be ready when the regular season begins.

The timing is inconvenient but not alarming for a Philadelphia team that acquired Greenard in April in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings and then signed him to a four-year, $100 million extension with $50 million in guaranteed money. The Eagles gave up two third-round picks in the deal, the 98th selection in this year’s draft and another third-rounder next year, to land a player they view as a foundational piece of their defensive front.

The general manager spoke to reporters on Wednesday and offered a measured read on the situation, expressing confidence in Greenard’s professionalism and preparation habits. He framed the player’s ability to get up to speed quickly as a function of who Greenard is as a football player and as a professional, rather than expressing concern about the missed practice time.

The Eagles needed Greenard to replace what they lost

Philadelphia’s decision to trade for Greenard was driven in part by the departure of Jaelan Phillips, who left in free agency to sign a four-year, $120 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. Phillips had been one of the Eagles’ most disruptive edge rushers, and replacing his production became a priority heading into the offseason.

He arrived with a track record that made the investment defensible despite the cost. He posted back-to-back double-digit sack seasons with the Vikings before a shoulder injury required season-ending surgery in 2025. That lost season limited him to three sacks in 12 games and likely depressed his market value enough that Philadelphia was able to secure him at a number that still looks like a significant commitment but may have been higher without the injury history.

He also carries Pro Bowl experience from his first season in Minnesota, where he recorded 12.5 sacks and established himself as one of the more productive edge rushers in the conference. Before that, he spent four seasons with the Houston Texans, where he developed into the kind of player who attracts multi-year, big-money offers.

How the Eagles’ edge group looks

He is expected to slide into the starting lineup once he clears the PUP list, leading an edge rushing group that also features Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith Jr. The Eagles have invested heavily in the position across multiple years, and his presence gives them the established, high-usage outside linebacker they needed to anchor the group.

The PUP designation means Greenard must miss at least the first four games of the regular season if he is still on the list when the season opens. However, the team’s statement that the injury is not expected to be a long-term issue suggests they anticipate clearing him before that threshold becomes relevant. PUP placements during training camp carry no mandatory game-week restrictions if a player is removed from the list before the season begins.

Missing preseason reps is a real cost for Greenard, who is joining a new system and building chemistry with new teammates, but his experience navigating NFL offenses and the team’s evident trust in his preparation habits suggest the organization is not panicking.

Philadelphia’s Super Bowl ambitions intact

The Eagles enter the season as one of the NFC’s most complete teams, and a pectoral strain during a summer lifting session does not change the broad contours of what the roster is capable of. His value to this team is real, and the expectation is that he will be available and productive when games begin to count.

At 29, Greenard remains in the prime window of a career that can still deliver several high-level seasons. The Eagles are betting he bounces back fully from the shoulder surgery and produces at or near the level he showed in that Pro Bowl season in Minnesota. If he does, Philadelphia’s defensive front will be one of the more formidable in the league.
