Khloé Kardashian has built a reputation for candor on her podcast, but a recent admission about her cats has landed her in the middle of one of the more heated celebrity controversies of the moment. The 41-year-old reality star revealed during an episode of her show that she had both of her cats declawed after receiving what she described as poor advice, and the response online was swift and largely unforgiving.

Kardashian has two grey cats named Grey Kitty and Baby Kitty, along with a Labrador named Peppermint. She has shared affectionate photos of the cats with her children on social media and spoken warmly about them in public. But on her podcast, she acknowledged that early in her experience as a first-time cat owner, she made a decision she now deeply regrets. She said she had not fully understood what the procedure involved and that she has felt guilty about it ever since. She also noted that she now takes significant precautions to keep the cats indoors, attaching tracking devices to them out of fear that they would be unable to protect themselves if they ever got outside.

What declawing actually means for a cat

Declawing is not a nail trim. The procedure involves the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe on a cat’s paws, removing the claw entirely and permanently. Animal welfare organizations describe it as a painful and medically unnecessary surgery that can have lasting consequences for a cat’s physical and psychological health.

According to Humane World for Animals, declawing significantly increases the likelihood of chronic back pain, litter box avoidance and biting behavior, as cats that can no longer use their claws for defense often resort to using their teeth instead. The procedure is banned outright or considered unethical by veterinary associations in dozens of countries. Within the United States, it has been prohibited in California, several other states, Washington D.C. and more than a dozen cities. That last point became central to much of the criticism directed at Kardashian, given that she is a California resident.

The internet’s reaction was immediate

After the podcast episode began circulating on social media, the backlash arrived quickly across multiple platforms. Animal rights advocates and everyday pet owners alike took issue not only with the decision itself but with Kardashian’s explanation for it. Many argued that claiming ignorance in the current information environment, where guidance on cat care is readily available online, was not a convincing defense.

The criticism ranged from pointed to genuinely harsh. Some commenters questioned her suitability as a pet owner altogether. Others focused on what they saw as a double standard, suggesting that someone who researches cosmetic procedures thoroughly should apply the same diligence to decisions affecting an animal in her care. A number of animal rights advocates used the moment to raise broader awareness about the practice, calling attention to the legal prohibitions already in place in her home state.

Khloé’s remorse and what comes next

Kardashian did not attempt to defend the decision. Her podcast comments were framed entirely around regret, and she was explicit about feeling terrible about what she had done. She acknowledged that her cats had become unhappy as a result of the procedure and that she had tried to compensate by creating a safe and controlled environment for them at home.

That remorse, while genuine in tone, did not soften the online response for many who felt the harm had already been done. Animal welfare advocates generally acknowledged that Kardashian’s willingness to speak openly about the experience could at least serve as a cautionary moment for other pet owners who might be considering the same procedure, even if it did nothing to reverse the consequences for her own cats.

The conversation her podcast episode started is still very much alive, and it has drawn renewed attention to declawing at a time when legislative momentum against the practice continues to grow across the country.
