Lando Norris has apologized to Franco Colapinto for saying the Alpine driver deserved a race ban following a crash that ended both their races in Baku.
What did he originally say?
Speaking shortly after retiring from Saturday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lando Norris said a driver causing a crash at a restart should face at least a one race ban, called on the governing body to be stricter, and suggested that drivers responsible for such incidents should not be on the grid. The remarks came minutes after he had been taken out of the race.
What happened on track?
A three car incident at a safety car restart on lap 36. Colapinto lost control and collected both his teammate Pierre Gasly and Norris. He was given a five place grid penalty and apologized to both drivers immediately afterward, describing cold brakes and cold tyres and saying he had been completely out of control.

Lando Norris said emotions were running high but declined to treat that as an excuse, noted he has made his own mistakes over the years and described incidents of this kind as part of racing at the limit. A wave of online abuse directed at Lando Norris across his social media accounts, largely from supporters of the driver he criticized. Alpine issued a statement condemning it, the fourth such statement the team has published this year.

Before the Baku weekend, Gasly disclosed that his girlfriend and his family had received online threats after he held up Colapinto late in a previous race. Not usefully framed that way. Colapinto has built a large following since his debut in 2024, and a portion of any large following behaves badly. Was the original criticism unreasonable?
Separable from how it was expressed. A driver arguing that restart incidents warrant tougher sanctions is making a legitimate sporting argument, and several drivers have made it.
