There are championships and then there are the ones that hit differently. For LeBron James, watching his son Bryce be part of an Arizona basketball team that just claimed the Big 12 conference tournament title clearly fell into the second category. The Los Angeles Lakers star made no effort to conceal how much the moment meant to him, opening up about the joy he felt seeing his youngest son thrive in Tucson.

LeBron made clear that watching Bryce grow within the Arizona program has been one of the highlights of his season, describing the experience as something that will pay off in a big way for his son down the road. He also touched on the similarities he sees between himself and Bryce, suggesting the apple has not fallen far from the tree in terms of personality and drive.

A redshirt year with a front-row seat

Bryce is not logging minutes on the court for Arizona this season. He made the decision to redshirt, preserving a year of eligibility while soaking in everything the program has to offer. But his presence has been felt in other ways. He has been a constant fixture on the sideline, visibly locked in and engaged with every game, cheering on his teammates and learning from the veterans around him.

For LeBron, that environment is exactly what he had hoped for his son. The chance to be around a winning culture, absorb the lessons that come with it and prepare for a bigger role next season appears to be everything the family envisioned when Bryce chose Arizona.

Big 12 champions and NCAA tournament bound

Arizona enters the NCAA tournament riding serious momentum. The Wildcats earned a No. 1 seed after finishing with just two losses on the season, both coming against Big 12 competition. Head coach Tommy Lloyd has built something special in Tucson, and this is only Arizona’s second year competing in the Big 12 after joining the conference. Winning the tournament title this early in that transition is a statement.

The Wildcats open tournament play against Long Island University in the Round of 64 and are widely considered one of the favorites to make a deep run.

A different path than Bronny

The James family has now seen two sons take the college route, each with a different experience. Bryce’s older brother Bronny spent a season at USC before entering the NBA Draft, though his team never reached the NCAA tournament during that time. Bryce now finds himself in a very different position, part of a program that is not just competing but winning at a high level.

Whether Bryce eventually follows his brother into the professional ranks remains to be seen, but his first college season, even as a redshirt, has already given him something Bronny never had at the collegiate level. A championship banner and a No. 1 seed to go with it.
