Rich Paul has a message for the teams waiting on LeBron James, the reporters publishing timelines and the commissioner of the NBA himself. Slow down.

The longtime agent and chief executive of Klutch Sports addressed the frenzy surrounding his client’s free agency decision on his podcast Monday, making clear that no external pressure, no matter the source, is going to accelerate his client’s process. Three weeks have now passed since Paul informed the Los Angeles Lakers that James would not return for the 2026-27 season, and still no announcement has come.

Paul pushed back firmly against recent reports suggesting a decision was imminent. He said the people publishing those reports do not have reliable information and that He described LeBron’s window as potentially anywhere from moments away to entirely uncertain, framing it not as a strategy but as a reflection of a man still working through a real choice that is genuinely his own.

Teams are calling but the answer is no

Several organizations have reached back out to Paul in recent days asking whether there is anything more they could be doing to improve their chances. His answer to all of them has been the same. Everything that needed to be said has been said, and no further lobbying is necessary or useful. Paul told those teams to go about their business in the meantime, including filling any open roster spots they may be holding.

That instruction is notable because it implies LeBron’s destination is not so certain that teams need to hold roster construction in place awaiting him. It also suggests Paul is not coordinating with anyone on timing in a way that would require teams to remain in a holding pattern.

The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat are among the franchises believed to remain in active pursuit. The three Eastern Conference clubs are understood to be the most seriously considered options at this stage, though Paul offered nothing to confirm or contradict that reporting.

The NBA commissioner weighs in

Even NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed his desire for a resolution last week at a sports business summit in New York, joking that he would like LeBron to make his announcement so the league could finalize its schedule. Paul said he spoke with Silver privately after those comments and told him the same thing he has been telling everyone else. The choice will be made when it is made.

Paul also addressed a comparison that has been floating around the sports media world, drawing a sharp distinction between the current situation and the 2010 television special in which LeBron announced his departure from Cleveland to join Miami. He rejected the idea that this free agency period is being dragged out for the sake of attention or spectacle. He framed it plainly as a business decision that deserves the same deliberation any significant career move would receive.

LeBron is not rushing for anyone

Paul’s most consistent theme across the interview was that no athlete should have to compress a significant life decision into a timeline set by outside parties. At 41, he is deciding where to spend what could be the final two seasons of a 23-year career. The weight of that decision, Paul argued, justifies however long it takes.

Pat Riley made a public appearance in recent days to make the case for a return to Miami, the city where LeBron won two championships and appeared in four consecutive NBA Finals from 2011 through 2014. His pitch drew significant attention. Paul’s response was understated. All the messages, he said, have already been received.

When pressed on whether LeBron was leaning in any particular direction or had a preferred order of consideration among the teams pursuing him, Paul declined entirely. There was nothing, he said, that he could share. The decision belongs to LeBron, and when LeBron knows, the world will know.
