Marcus Spears stopped playing his son one-on-one for a reason

The top-ranked 2027 basketball recruit just helped win a championship, and his father, a former NFL star, says he sees a future No. 1 NBA draft pick.

Marcus Spears has faced some of the most physically imposing athletes in professional football. He spent years as a defensive lineman in the NFL, built for contact and competition at the highest level. None of that prepared him for what his son has become on the basketball court. Spears, now an ESPN NFL analyst, says he has officially stopped playing his son one-on-one. Not because he lost interest, but because he stopped winning.

He made the announcement himself, without any apparent embarrassment. He told reporters over Super Bowl weekend that going one-on-one with his son at this point would only end one way, and he has made peace with that. The turning point, he said, came when Marcus Jr. was 15 years old and already pushing his father to the edge in pickup games. Since then, the gap has only grown wider.

Who Marcus Spears Jr. is

Marcus Spears Jr. is currently ranked as the No. 1 basketball recruit in the class of 2027. At 6 feet 9 inches, he plays with a combination of size, skill, and basketball IQ that has college programs across the country paying close attention. He holds scholarship offers from Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, and Houston, among others, and that list will almost certainly keep growing.

He is currently developing under former NBA All-Star Jermaine O’Neal, who coaches the Overtime Elite FaZe team. That team just won the Overtime Elite league championship, and Marcus Jr. was a central reason why. In the title game, he put up 30 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and handed out three assists. For a recruit who already had serious buzz around his name, that performance added another layer to the conversation.

The Spears role in his son’s rise

His father does not take a passive role in any of this. Spears has been clear that the family is approaching Marcus Jr.’s development with intention, and that includes being selective about who gets access to him. The relationship with O’Neal is one he speaks about with genuine appreciation. According to Spears, O’Neal has been among the most important figures in his son’s growth outside of immediate family, and his ability to teach the game at a high level has shown in the results.

O’Neal played 18 seasons in the NBA and earned All-Star recognition during his career with the Indiana Pacers. Having that kind of experience in a coaching role is not something every young prospect gets, and the Spears family understands what that access is worth.

The college question and what comes after

Marcus Jr. has not committed anywhere, and his father says the right fit matters more than the reputation of any particular program. Schools like Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina will almost certainly be part of the conversation, but Spears has indicated the family will weigh the environment and development opportunity more heavily than the name on the jersey.

The long-term goal is not complicated. Spears wants his son in the NBA as quickly as possible. His stated dream scenario is for Marcus Jr. to spend one year in college and transition directly to the professional level. That timeline is aggressive, but it is not unrealistic given where the prospect currently stands.

Spears also went further than most fathers would in projecting what his son’s ceiling looks like. He said plainly that he believes Marcus Jr. has the potential to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. That is not the kind of prediction a former NFL player turned television analyst makes casually. It is a declaration of belief, and so far, nothing about Marcus Jr.’s trajectory has given him a reason to walk it back.

The one-on-one games may be over in the Spears household. Everything else, it seems, is just getting started.
