Hollywood just handed us the pairing nobody knew they needed.

Lionsgate has officially acquired Ride or Die, a brand-new romantic buddy action-comedy set to star Marlon Wayans and Keke Palmer — and the announcement alone is enough to generate serious excitement. This marks the first time the two stars have ever shared the screen together, making Ride or Die one of the most anticipated film announcements to come out of March 2026.

What Ride or Die Is All About

The film follows Wayans as Martin Banks, a by-the-book robbery detective, and Palmer as Tami Moore, a tough narcotics detective whose differing styles clash when the two are paired together to stop two billion dollars worth of deadly opioids from flooding the streets of Chicago.

The premise is explosive, the stakes are sky-high, and the chemistry between the two leads promises to be electric. Wayans himself has described the film as When Harry Met Sally with guns — a pitch that instantly captures the tone the project is going for. Equal parts romance, action, and laugh-out-loud comedy, Ride or Die is being positioned as the first true romantic buddy-cop action comedy in Hollywood history.

The Talent Behind the Camera

The project is stacked both in front of and behind the camera

  • Wayans co-wrote the screenplay alongside longtime collaborator Rick Alvarez
  • Both Wayans and Alvarez will produce through their joint production company, Ugly Baby
  • Neal H. Moritz will produce through Original Film, alongside Toby Ascher
  • Palmer and her mother Sharon Palmer are in talks to executive produce
  • Lionsgate’s Scott O’Brien will oversee the project for the studio

The involvement of Moritz, whose Original Film banner has produced some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, signals that Lionsgate is treating Ride or Die as a major theatrical investment rather than a low-key release.

Two Stars at the Top of Their Game

What makes this pairing so compelling is that both Wayans and Palmer are arriving at this project with serious momentum behind them.

Palmer currently stars in Peacock’s comedy series The Burbs and is set to appear in Boots Riley’s upcoming film I Love Boosters. She was also recently honored as the NAACP Image Awards’ Entertainer of the Year — a recognition that underscores just how dominant her presence has become across film, television, and culture. At just 32 years old, she has already built a resume that most veterans spend a lifetime chasing.

Wayans, meanwhile, is riding a career renaissance of his own. He recently starred in the football horror film Him, produced by Jordan Peele, and is currently starring in and producing Scary Movie 6, set to hit theaters on June 5. His Wild Child Tour is also currently underway, proving that his connection with live audiences remains as strong as ever.

Palmer Brings the Star Power

Beyond her acting resume, Palmer‘s cultural footprint adds another layer of excitement to this project. She is a 2023 Emmy winner, hosts the acclaimed podcast Baby, This Is Keke Palmer for Wondery, and has built one of the most loyal and engaged fanbases in the entertainment industry. Her involvement as both star and executive producer signals genuine ownership of the project — not just a paycheck appearance.

Together, Wayans and Palmer represent a new kind of Hollywood pairing — funny, fearless, and deeply connected to Black audiences who have long been underserved by the buddy-cop genre. Ride or Die has the potential to change that in a major way.

No official release date has been confirmed yet, but with production eyeing a late 2026 start, a 2027 theatrical rollout is well within reach. One thing is already clear — this is the movie Hollywood did not know it was missing.
