Megan Thee Stallion did not call a publicist. She opened Instagram.
On Saturday, the three-time Grammy winner posted a message to her Instagram Stories that made clear her relationship with Dallas Mavericks forward Klay Thompson was over. Without naming him directly, the target of her message was unmistakable. She described supporting him through difficult stretches of his basketball season only to have him question whether he could maintain a monogamous relationship. She closed the post by saying she needed a real break and signing off entirely.
The post was up long enough to spread across social media before the conversation fully caught up to it.
How the relationship started and where it went
Thompson and Megan went public in July 2025 when he accompanied her to her Pete and Thomas Foundation benefit gala. He spoke openly about his pride in her that evening and she returned the sentiment on the red carpet. The relationship moved quickly from there, visible across both of their social media accounts through outings, celebrations and affectionate posts.
By February, Megan had publicly described feeling more comfortable in this relationship than in previous ones and had suggested she was open to marriage. Thompson celebrated his 36th birthday that same month with Megan organizing a surprise performance from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, his longtime favorite group. The relationship had the texture of something serious and, to outside observers, appeared stable.
What she said and what it implies
Megan’s Instagram post described a pattern of mood swings and difficult behavior from Thompson during the basketball season, followed by what she characterized as a sudden admission that he was uncertain about monogamy. The post was direct and specific enough to make clear this was not a mutual or amicable decision.
She did not elaborate further or post a follow-up. The message stood on its own.
Thompson has not responded publicly. The timing places the breakup in the final stretch of the NBA regular season, a period Megan’s post suggested had already been strained.
Megan Thee Stallion seemingly accuses Klay Thompson of cheating in new Instagram story:
“Cheating, had me around your whole family playing house…
got “cold feet”

Where both of them are right now
Thompson is in the third and final year of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks and has publicly expressed uncertainty about his future with the team. A trade or departure this offseason has been discussed as a real possibility, meaning he is navigating both professional and personal transitions simultaneously.
Megan has been occupied on multiple fronts. She launched a new swimwear collection earlier this year and recently made history as the first woman to play the role of Zidler in the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” during her limited run. She was briefly hospitalized earlier this week after experiencing exhaustion and dehydration during a performance and had to exit the show mid-run. Her representative confirmed she was treated and discharged and expected to return to the stage by Thursday.
Nine months in the public eye
The relationship lasted roughly nine months from its public debut to Today’s announcement. During that time it attracted significant attention, partly because of who both people are and partly because both were open about it in ways that celebrity relationships often are not. Megan spoke about it in interviews. Thompson showed up at her events. The visibility made the ending more public than most.
Whether the post marks a final statement or the opening of a longer public exchange remains to be seen. For now, Megan has said what she wanted to say and logged off.
