Mike Vrabel and the preseason sit-out strategy and the roster concern behind it

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged Monday that he does not view his team as a deep roster, and he pushed back on any suggestion his comment was directed at the front office, saying he and the personnel staff are all part of the same decision-making process.

Vrabel made the depth assessment after the Patriots’ preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, when he explained why starters including quarterback Drake Maye and receiver A.J. Brown had not played. He said on sports radio WEEI on Monday that the comment was about the young players the team needs to develop behind its front-line contributors, not a shot at personnel leadership.

He described the players kept out of the Saturday game as the team’s core, and said the real challenge is finding and developing the backups who would be the first men in behind those players.

What the depth problem looks like

Vrabel was candid about what depth-building requires over time. He said the team needs to continue drafting well and developing late-round picks, specifically mentioning interior offensive linemen, special teams linebackers and edge players who may not have experience in the Patriots’ 3-4 defensive system but can be developed within it.

He said he expected the roster to need many of those depth players during the course of a 17-game regular season because injuries and circumstances would inevitably put them on the field. Getting those players ready to play is part of the coaching staff’s responsibility, he said.

Injuries have thinned New England’s depth beyond its normal limitations, as they have across the league in training camp. Vrabel was careful to frame the depth question as a construction issue to be solved over time rather than a crisis.

The context around the comment

The Patriots surprised many observers in 2025, Vrabel’s first season as head coach, when he was paired with executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, who had been with the organization since 2020 and was elevated to the personnel chief role in 2024. The team’s performance in that first year together set expectations heading into 2026 that the candid depth assessment may now moderate.

The Patriots conclude their preseason schedule Thursday against the Cleveland Browns. Vrabel said he has not decided whether Maye and the starters will play in that game.

New England opens the regular season Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Seattle Seahawks in what is framed as a Super Bowl LX rematch.

The Maye and Brown question

Vrabel’s explanation of why the team’s best players have not played in the preseason is simple. The Patriots are thin enough behind them that they cannot afford to lose those players to injury before the games count. A preseason game carries no points, and sitting Patriots veterans to preserve health is standard practice.

The tension in Vrabel’s comments is that sitting stars and acknowledging depth concerns simultaneously can read as contradictory. He is protecting his best players while also saying the team needs more behind those players. Both things can be true, and the regular season will determine how much the depth gap matters.

Maye enters the season as one of the most watched Patriots quarterbacks in the league after his emergence in 2025. His development continued in training camp alongside Brown, who had strong reviews from joint practices with the Eagles.
