NBA Las Vegas expansion and the groups bidding

The NBA is expected to select a winning bid for its Las Vegas expansion franchise soon, with reporting placing the price at a minimum of $12 billion to $13 billion covering the team and a new arena.

How large is that number?

Unprecedented, by a wide margin. The most recent comparison points in the source are a $6.05 billion sale of an NFL franchise and a Milwaukee valuation of $3.5 billion in 2023. A figure roughly double the highest American sports sale on record, for a team that does not yet exist, indicates what the league believes a new franchise in that market is worth and what bidders are willing to accept as an entry cost.

Who is bidding?

Three groups. One is led by Nancy Walton Laurie, daughter of a Walmart co founder, and Bill Laurie, a former NHL owner, who keep a home in the Las Vegas area. A second is led by Canadian investor Steve Apostolopoulos with his brothers, partnered with Marc Lasry, who owned the Bucks when Milwaukee won the 2021 title and now runs a fund investing in sports properties. The third pairs Jerry Colangelo, the former Suns owner and longtime USA Basketball director, with Bill Foley, majority owner of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Why is Las Vegas resolving before Seattle?

Three reasons, and only one is about basketball. The bidding is livelier there with higher offers. Seattle already has a ready arena while Las Vegas requires building one, which means the logistics need settling as part of the award rather than afterward. And the groups that lose here can enter the Seattle process, which gives the league a reason to run them in sequence rather than in parallel.

What does that sequencing mean for bidders?

That losing is not final. A group that comes second in the NBA Las Vegas expansion race arrives in Seattle with its financing assembled and its case made, which is a considerable advantage over a bidder starting cold. It also means the price established here sets an expectation for the second franchise.

What about the arena?

Still unresolved in one case. One bidder had earlier suggested playing at an existing arena where his hockey team plays, but reporting indicates a new building would be constructed if that group wins. Arena construction is why the price includes more than the franchise and why the timeline extends years past the award.

When would these teams play?

The league has targeted the 2028 to 29 season at the earliest, with a formal approval process for both expansion teams expected by the end of December. That gap reflects construction, roster mechanics including an expansion draft, and scheduling changes across the league.

Why expand now?

Money and market, principally. Expansion fees are paid to existing owners and do not count as league revenue subject to sharing with players, which makes them unusually attractive to the 30 current franchises. Las Vegas has absorbed teams in hockey and football in under a decade, and the market has performed better than sceptics expected.

What should be watched?

The announcement, and then the Seattle process. The NBA Las Vegas expansion price is the number that will define what a franchise is worth for the rest of the decade.
