Nick Cannon is not known for holding back, and this week he proved it again. The 45-year-old television personality and father of 12 publicly acknowledged that he applies completely different dating rules to his 15-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, whom he shares with Mariah Carey. His son has his blessing to date. His daughter does not.

Cannon made the admission during a recent public appearance, describing his approach with unusual candor. He confirmed that he had not only allowed Moroccan to date but had actively encouraged it. Monroe, on the other hand, is off limits entirely. He went so far as to suggest that if she started dating, he would wind up in legal trouble, his colorful way of saying the subject is completely closed.

He did not try to justify the gap or disguise it as something more balanced. He called it a double standard, plainly and without apology. That honesty, more than the rule itself, is what has kept people talking.

A double standard with deep roots

What Cannon described is not unusual. Research from the University of Michigan found that gender-based differences in how parents approach dating and courtship are widespread, persistent and likely more common than most studies have previously captured. The challenge in measuring this gap has always been social pressure. Parents who publicly claim to treat their children equally often reveal different instincts when their responses are measured in a way that removes the incentive to appear fair.

The research found that the size of the gap between how parents think about a son dating versus a daughter dating shifts depending on the specific situation. It also showed that these patterns do not begin in adolescence. Scholars have traced gender-differentiated parenting back to infancy, where distinct behavioral expectations are already being reinforced long before a child has any concept of dating.

By the time a teenager is 15 and navigating real relationships, those expectations are already deeply embedded on both sides of the parent-child dynamic.

Why daughters get different rules

Cannon’s framing around Monroe reflects something many fathers of teenage girls would recognize even if they would never say it so directly. The instinct behind it tends to follow a familiar logic: a son’s romantic life is treated as a natural rite of passage, while a daughter’s is treated as a vulnerability requiring management and control.

That logic, even when it comes from a place of genuine love and protection, carries consequences that extend well beyond the teenage years. When girls receive the message that their personal lives need more supervision than their brothers’ do, it shapes how they come to understand their own autonomy. It influences how they evaluate risk in future relationships and whether they feel entitled to make their own decisions.

The same University of Michigan research found that parental attitudes toward courtship are strongly linked to the choices children eventually make as adults. The rules set at 15 do not simply expire when a child turns 18.

What makes this moment worth paying attention to

What separates Cannon’s comments from the quiet double standards playing out in living rooms across the country is that he said it out loud. Most parents who apply these same unequal expectations never name them. They simply enforce them, leaving children to absorb the imbalance without any conversation about what it means or why it exists.

Research confirms that social pressure to appear fair-minded actually causes parents to underreport how differently they think about sons and daughters when it comes to dating. The real gap is almost certainly wider than most families admit even to themselves.

Moroccan and Monroe are moving through the exact same stage of adolescence at the exact same time, facing the same pressures and emotional milestones. The only variable their father has introduced is gender. Whether that is a rule worth keeping is a question every family, not just celebrity ones, deserves to sit with honestly.
