Nicolas Batum and a message to his son

Nicolas Batum has retired from professional basketball, announcing the decision Monday in a video recorded with his 10 year old son. He was 37, and the announcement landed on his birthday.

How did he announce it?

Directly to his child, on camera. Nicolas Batum told his son he was finished playing and framed the decision around wanting to be home with him, describing his time as served and making room for others. He noted his run with the national team had already ended two years earlier and said he had done everything he set out to do. The video carried two dates, his birth and the day of the announcement, 35 years apart.

How long did the career run?

Twenty years as a professional, 18 of them in the NBA and 15 with France. He played two seasons in the French league before Portland selected him in the first round in 2008, when he was still a teenager. Seven seasons in Portland were followed by a long stretch in Charlotte, a brief stop in Philadelphia during the 2023 to 24 season and six years with the Clippers.

What do the numbers say?

Career averages of 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists, with 37.1 percent shooting from three. Those figures undersell what Nicolas Batum provided. He defended multiple positions, spaced the floor and fit alongside almost any roster construction, which is why he lasted nearly two decades in a league that rarely keeps role players that long. He appeared in 76 playoff games and reached the Western Conference finals with the Clippers in 2021.

What did he do for France?

More than he did in the NBA, by his own accounting. He started for French sides that took Olympic silver in 2020 and 2024, won World Cup bronze in 2014 and 2019, and medaled at three EuroBasket tournaments. Playing alongside Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier across that stretch, he was part of the group that made France a permanent fixture in international medal rounds rather than an occasional threat.

What moment did he pick?

The semifinal win over Germany at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, which he called the best basketball experience of his life. A player with a long NBA career choosing a national team game on home soil as his defining night says something about where the meaning of that career sat for him.

How did the final season go?

Quietly. Nicolas Batum averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds across 74 appearances last season, the usage of a veteran playing limited minutes on a contending roster. The Clippers declined their option on his $5.9 million contract for the coming season earlier this summer, which left him an unrestricted free agent rather than a retiree at the time.

What does he leave behind?

A template. Nicolas Batum arrived as a teenager with athletic promise and built a career on the things that do not require peak physical ability, meaning positional versatility, reliable shooting and an understanding of what a team needed from him on a given night. Careers built that way outlast careers built on explosiveness.

Will he stay in the game?

He did not say. His stated reason was returning home to his son and stepping aside for others, which reads as a clean break rather than a pause. Players with his international standing and his reputation for basketball intelligence typically find their way into coaching or federation roles if they want them.
