Harry Potter star Paapa Essiedu speaks out on threats tied to his historic casting

When Paapa Essiedu was cast as Severus Snape in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter series, he understood the role would come with scrutiny. What he did not anticipate was the scale and ferocity of what followed. Since the announcement, the British actor of Ghanaian descent has been subjected to a sustained wave of racist harassment online, including direct threats against his life.

In a wide ranging interview published recently, Essiedu described coming across messages threatening to show up at his home and harm him. He also shared that he had received messages telling him to walk away from the production or face fatal consequences. He noted that while he tries to hold onto the belief that he will be safe, no one working in any profession should have to absorb that kind of threat simply for doing their job.

A career built on complex, celebrated roles

Essiedu is no stranger to high profile work. He has taken on demanding historical and literary figures across stage and screen, including portrayals that drew significant critical praise in the United Kingdom. His casting in Harry Potter nonetheless appears to have generated a level of public reaction unlike anything he has previously encountered, marked largely by hostility rooted in his race rather than any assessment of his abilities as a performer.

He has been open about the emotional weight the abuse carries, even as he pushes through it. At the same time, he described the hatred as something that sharpens his focus rather than diminishes it. The thought of a younger generation seeing themselves reflected in a world as expansive and beloved as Harry Potter has become, in his words, a reason to press forward rather than retreat.

A cast assembled for the long haul

Essiedu joins a core adult ensemble that was announced last spring. John Lithgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer is set to play Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost will portray Rubeus Hagrid. The series represents a significant long term commitment for everyone involved, with production expected to span years.

Essiedu has been candid about what that timeline means for his life. He acknowledged that the project will reshape his world in fundamental ways and that he has made a conscious decision to embrace that reality rather than resist it. The role that Alan Rickman made iconic in the original film adaptations now falls to him, and he appears to have accepted both the privilege and the pressure that come with it.

Controversy has followed the series from the start

The production has not been without tension beyond the casting backlash. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has faced widespread criticism over her views on gender identity, and the series has become a recurring flashpoint in that broader debate. Essiedu previously added his name to an open letter expressing solidarity with the transgender community following a U.K. Supreme Court ruling connected to positions Rowling has publicly supported.

Rowling responded to speculation that she might push for Essiedu’s removal from the project by stating she does not hold the power to remove cast members and that she does not believe in stripping people of their livelihoods over differing beliefs.

Lithgow also addressed the controversy recently, acknowledging that he had seriously considered stepping away from the role before deciding to remain. He pointed to the body of work itself as his reason for staying, arguing that the Harry Potter stories, read carefully, contain nothing that reflects the views his participation was being associated with.

Essiedu, for his part, has chosen not to formally report the threats he has received, though he acknowledges he cannot simply set them aside. The abuse, he suggests, is not invisible even when ignored. Others notice it too and reach out to check on him.

That quiet solidarity, it seems, matters as much as anything else right now.
