Peyton Watson trade and what the Cavaliers gave up to get him

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired forward Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a five-team trade Wednesday, agreeing to give the 23-year-old wing a four-year, $88 million contract as they retool their roster following a sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals.

Watson will sign his new deal with a player option and trade kicker as part of the sign-and-trade that brings him to Cleveland. He had career highs last season across all major statistical categories, averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 41 percent from three-point range. He started 40 games and had four 30-point performances after having none in his first three NBA seasons. Since entering the league in 2022-23, he ranks second in field goal percentage allowed as the contesting defender among players who have contested at least 2,000 shots.

The full trade breakdown

In exchange for Watson, Denver receives an unprotected Cavaliers first-round pick in 2031 and a Sacramento Kings second-round pick in 2032. Before this deal the Nuggets had no tradeable first-round picks, making the 2031 Cavaliers pick a meaningful asset addition.

The Cavaliers are also sending Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers, who are acquiring him via a trade exception. The Clippers sent a 2027 second-round pick to Cleveland as part of their side of the deal.

Cleveland is sending Tre Mann, the 2027 second-rounder received from the Clippers, and cash to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Cam Whitmore. Mann fills a guard need for Washington and has a prior relationship with Wizards general manager Will Dawkins from their time together with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Whitmore gives Cleveland a smaller salary that creates additional flexibility under the first apron.

The Washington Wizards are also sending Julian Reese to the Nuggets, who will waive him off his two-way contract.

The deal originated from the Cavaliers trading Dennis Schroder to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann last Friday, which became the foundation for the larger five-team swap.

What it means for Cleveland

Watson is the primary target for the Cavaliers, who identified athleticism and scoring off the wing as a need after their postseason exit. His statistical breakout last season in Denver demonstrated an ability to contribute as a starter on a contending team, and his defensive metrics add a dimension that fits the identity Cleveland has built.

The Cavaliers also added Whitmore at a salary that helps the organization manage its cap positioning. Losing Strus removes an established perimeter shooter but creates the asset space and financial structure that made acquiring Watson possible.

What it means for Denver

The Nuggets had been operating without tradeable first-round picks, which limited their ability to participate in significant trade discussions. The 2031 unprotected Cavaliers first represents a meaningful recovery of future capital for a franchise managing its roster around Nikola Jokic.

The Nuggets are operating $1.3 million over the second apron and have two open roster spots. They will generate a trade exception equal to 50 percent of Watson’s salary, though they cannot use that exception to exceed the second apron because the structure involves a sign-and-trade.

Watson’s path to Cleveland

Before settling on Cleveland’s offer, Watson’s representatives received interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers and Clippers. The guaranteed $88 million over four years was the deciding factor.
