Stephen Curry and the cap space question

Stephen Curry has not signed the contract extension available to him, and he says that will change nothing about how he plays when Golden State opens training camp next week.

What is on the table?

An extension of up to two years and $136.7 million, which he became eligible for on Aug. 29 off a one year, $62.6 million expiring deal. The team presented several versions immediately, according to people within the organisation, ranging from the maximum to modest reductions to the option of waiting and deciding later depending on what flexibility the front office can generate.

Why hasn’t he decided?

Information, by his own account. Stephen Curry has said the decision will come once he has everything he needs to make the right one, that conversations with the team have been productive, and that going unsigned will not weigh on him during the season. He also said he wants no drama or talking points attached to a team that should simply be competing.

Is he considering leaving?

No. He has been explicit that free agency is not the objective and that finishing his career in Golden State remains the goal. The delay concerns terms and timing rather than destination, which is a distinction worth holding onto as this story develops through the season.

What are the cap implications?

Considerable. Golden State is projected to hold more than $100 million in space next summer, a product of expiring contracts across the roster. A maximum extension for Stephen Curry would cut that to roughly $45 million. That gap is the difference between a team able to pursue a significant addition and one working at the margins.

Is he taking less money?

He has not said so. What he has described is a preference for being on a competitive team with flexibility the franchise has lacked in recent years, and a balancing act involving the roster, his stage of career and what he called desperation to win. Those are the considerations a player weighs before taking a discount, but he has committed to nothing, and treating his comments as a signal would be reading further than he has gone.

Where is he physically?

Coming off a difficult year. He was limited to 43 games last season by persistent pain and swelling in his right knee. He said this week that he used the offseason well and has no hesitation about his physical condition entering camp. At 38 and beginning an 18th season, that availability question sits underneath the contract question. Two more years at maximum money is a different proposition for a player who appeared in half a season than for one who did not.

Why does the timing work in his favour?

Because waiting costs him little. Stephen Curry can watch how the roster performs, see what the front office does at the deadline and decide with more information than he has now. The relationship with the general manager appears settled enough that neither side needs to force it, and no deadline compels a decision before the season ends.

What happens next?

Camp opens in Hawaii next week and the season begins Oct. 21 in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The extension can be signed at any point, and the more instructive signal will be whether he moves before the trade deadline rather than whether he moves this month.
