Teddy Bridgewater has retired from the NFL again, stepping away from the Detroit Lions during training camp and being placed on the reserve/retired list ahead of Sunday’s practice, ending what would have been his third stint with the organization.

The Lions moved quickly to replace him in the quarterback room, signing Joshua Dobbs to a one-year, $1.425 million contract with $475,000 fully guaranteed. Dobbs, 31, previously spent time on Detroit’s practice squad in 2022 and most recently served as Drake Maye’s backup with the New England Patriots last season.

Bridgewater, 33, had been signed by Detroit in March as a free agent to serve as Jared Goff’s backup. He missed the team’s last two practices for an undisclosed reason before the retirement was formalized. Head coach Dan Campbell said he believes this retirement will stick, noting that Bridgewater has carried significant concern about letting the team down, and that by retiring he was doing what he felt he needed to do.

Campbell praised Bridgewater warmly, describing him as the type of teammate who always competed with everything he had and who brought a huge heart to the locker room. He said Bridgewater would be missed.

A career of resilience and second chances

He was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Louisville and made the Pro Bowl in 2015, establishing himself as a potential franchise quarterback. His career was then redirected by a catastrophic knee injury in August 2016 that kept him out for an entire season and required extensive rehabilitation before he returned to the field.

From that point forward, he carved out a long career as a reliable backup and occasional starter across multiple organizations. He played for the Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Lions across a 12-year career. In 83 career games including 65 starts, he completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns and a 90.3 passer rating.

He had previously retired after the 2023 season before returning to play for Tampa Bay in 2025, where he appeared in four games and completed eight of 15 passes for 62 yards. Returning to Detroit this offseason appeared to be a final attempt to extend his career as a backup and mentor in a familiar environment.

What his retirement means for Detroit

His value in the Lions’ locker room was described as going beyond the statistics. Campbell’s comments reflected a view of him as a leader and mentor whose presence in the building was beneficial independent of the plays he would run in games. Losing that during training camp is a different kind of roster challenge.

Dobbs fills the roster spot but is a different kind of player than what Bridgewater represented. He is serviceable as a backup quarterback and brings his own experience, but the intangibles Campbell described in Bridgewater are not easily replaced through a transaction.

Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer is expected to receive significant snaps in Detroit’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, as the Lions sort out the dynamics of the quarterback room behind Goff.

The nature of the retirement

This is the second time Bridgewater has retired, and the fact that Campbell commented on believing it will stick this time reflects the reality that players sometimes test retirement before committing to it fully. The circumstances, stepping away during training camp rather than at the end of a season, suggest that the decision came from a personal place rather than a performance evaluation.

Bridgewater expressed no desire to let the team down. In stepping away, he removed himself from a team that valued him, which is in some ways its own form of tribute to the care he took about his impact on those around him.
