Terrion Arnold situation is complicated but Seattle says it has real interest

The Seattle Seahawks brought free agent cornerback Terrion Arnold to their training facility on Sunday for a visit and workout, and head coach Mike Macdonald said Monday the team has interest in signing him, while acknowledging the serious legal situation surrounding the former Detroit Lions first-round pick.

He was released by Detroit in late June, less than a week after he turned himself in to authorities on felony charges stemming from a February incident in Tampa, Florida. He faces four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery in connection with allegations that he orchestrated the kidnapping and beating of three men whom prosecutors say he wrongly suspected of stealing cash, luxury watches and bags from him. Each charge carries a potential sentence of life in prison. No trial date has been set.

He has denied the allegations through his representatives. He posted a $1 million bond and was released from custody June 30. Among the conditions set by a Hillsborough County judge is that he remain at his Tallahassee, Florida residence except when playing, training or traveling with an NFL team, or making court-related appearances.

What the Seahawks said

Macdonald described the Sunday visit as excellent and said he enjoyed meeting Arnold. He said the team is doing its due diligence and is aware of the circumstances surrounding the legal situation. He described Seattle as a place where people can be the best versions of themselves when given the opportunity, and said the team would seek counsel from anyone in the building who has a prior relationship with the player.

The Seahawks’ defensive backs coach Karl Scott recruited Arnold to Alabama before leaving the school ahead of Arnold’s freshman season. He was also a college teammate of Seattle’s third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe. Macdonald said Scott’s connection is not as close as it might appear since he left before coaching Arnold directly, but that his perspective would be sought as part of the team’s evaluation.

The roster context

Seattle has a gap in its cornerback depth. After allowing Riq Woolen to leave in free agency, the team has Noah Igbinoghene and Nehemiah Pritchett competing for the No. 3 cornerback spot behind Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe. Rookie third-round pick Julian Neal, who could enter that competition, has been sidelined since early in training camp with an undisclosed injury.

Signing him would address that depth need. The Seahawks had significant interest in Arnold leading up to the 2024 draft, when he was selected 24th overall by Detroit. He has one interception and 18 passes defensed in 24 career games. He played in only eight games last season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery.

What happens next

Arnold has also visited the Houston Texans and has a scheduled visit with the New Orleans Saints. Whether any of those teams signs him will depend on both football fit and each organization’s comfort with the legal circumstances.

If the Seahawks sign Arnold, his actual availability to play is uncertain. Macdonald said the team understands that anything is on the table in terms of when he might be eligible to participate. The NFL may also conduct its own investigation under its personal conduct policy, which could result in a suspension regardless of the outcome of the criminal case.

For a cornerback market that typically rewards even uncertain investments at his age and draft pedigree, teams will be weighing the potential value of signing an athlete with Arnold’s physical tools against the significant unknowns of his legal and availability situation.
