Tobias Harris injury and a reevaluation ahead

San Antonio announced before Sunday’s intrasquad scrimmage that forward Tobias Harris strained his left calf during training camp, leaving him questionable for the Oct. 20 season opener against Oklahoma City.

What is the timeline?

Open. A team spokesman said he would sit out Sunday’s scrimmage and be reevaluated after the preseason, which means no return date has been set and the opener is the first checkpoint rather than a target.

How serious is a calf strain?

It depends entirely on grade, which has not been disclosed. A mild strain can resolve in a week or two. A more significant one can cost a month or more, and calf injuries carry a meaningful reinjury risk if a player returns before the muscle has fully recovered. Teams are generally cautious with them for that reason, particularly early in a season when there is little to gain from rushing.

What was he signed to do?

Start, and space the floor. He joined San Antonio in July on a two year deal worth $31 million and was expected to open the season in the starting lineup. His value is in shooting from the frontcourt, which creates room for teammates to operate inside, and that is a role the Tobias Harris injury leaves unfilled if he is unavailable.

Where did he come from?

Detroit, after two seasons there. He averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in his second stint with the Pistons, serving as one of few veterans on one of the league’s youngest rosters. That team improved from among the worst in the league to 60 wins last season and won a playoff series for the first time since 2008. He had signed in Detroit in 2024 on a two year deal worth $52 million, following six seasons in Philadelphia.

Why does the pay cut matter?

It frames the move. Taking $31 million over two years after a $52 million contract indicates a market that valued him lower at 34 than at 32, which is ordinary for a player at that stage. It also means San Antonio is not carrying significant salary risk if the Tobias Harris injury costs him time.

Who absorbs the minutes?

Not specified, and the preseason will answer it. A team losing a planned starter before the opener typically discovers something about its depth, and for a young roster that is not entirely a cost.

Does this change the season?

Almost certainly not on its own. A calf strain in early October is the kind of injury most teams absorb without consequence, and the meaningful question is whether it recurs rather than whether he misses the first game.

What should be watched?

The reevaluation after the preseason. That is when a timeline will exist, and anything said before then is holding language.
