Why Tom Holland says he could not survive Hollywood without Zendaya

Tom Holland has never been shy about his admiration for Zendaya, but a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast offered the most detailed picture yet of what her presence in his life actually means. Beyond the romance and the shared red carpets, Holland described Zendaya as something more essential, a steadying force in an industry that rarely offers stability, and the person who makes the hardest parts of his career feel manageable.

He spoke about her professional approach with a level of reverence that went beyond the polished praise actors typically offer each other in interviews. To him, Zendaya’s commitment to her craft is total and consistent, something he finds genuinely inspiring rather than simply impressive. She brings the same intensity and intention to every role regardless of how different it might be from the last, and that drive, he said, pushes him to match it.

Tom Holland on Zendaya’s talent

Holland pointed to the range Zendaya has demonstrated across her recent work as evidence of something rare. Her portrayal of Rue in Euphoria bears almost no resemblance to her performance as Emma in The Drama, yet both carry the same depth of commitment. For Holland, that ability to inhabit completely different people without losing authenticity is what separates truly exceptional actors from merely talented ones. He said plainly that he considers her the best working actor right now, and his tone suggested it was not a compliment offered lightly.

What makes their dynamic particularly valuable, Holland explained, is that she understands the pressures of the industry from the inside. When the business becomes overwhelming, as it regularly does for actors at their level, having someone who can speak to that experience with genuine personal knowledge rather than sympathy from a distance is something he described as invaluable. They are able to support each other through the difficult moments and celebrate the good ones with someone who truly understands the context of both.

The Spider-Man scene they refused to let go

One of the most telling moments Holland shared involved a situation that arose on the set of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. After completing his portion of a particular scene, Holland watched as the camera shifted to Zendaya for her coverage. Something felt off to him, but the kind of honest creative feedback he wanted to offer is not something he would feel comfortable raising with just any co-star.

Because of the trust built between them, he asked her directly whether she thought the scene was working. She agreed that it was not. Holland then took the concern to the producers, who shared the same feeling, before bringing it to the director. He was transparent about what he and Zendaya were not connecting with emotionally in the moment, acknowledging that hours of filming had already been invested and that raising the issue was uncomfortable.

Cretton responded with calm and openness. He paused production, rewrote the scene, and returned to shoot it again the following day. Holland said the reworked version is among the strongest in the film, and the outcome reinforced for him why speaking up, and having the right partner to speak up alongside, matters so much on a set.

Zendaya on their partnership

The admiration runs in both directions. In a separate interview with Elle earlier this year, Zendaya described working alongside Holland on Spider-Man as something that feels like returning home. She talked about the ease of going to work every day alongside her closest companion and the way their shared history with the franchise makes the experience feel personal rather than purely professional. Their dogs come to set. The atmosphere, she said, feels like a family rather than a production.

Together, Holland and Zendaya have built something that extends well beyond any single project. For Holland, that relationship is not just a personal gift. It is the thing that makes the rest of it possible.
