Andy Reid has a tell. When the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach genuinely likes where something is headed, he smiles. And on Friday, ahead of next week’s NFL combine, Reid was smiling plenty when the subject of Travis Kelce’s future came up.
Reid’s tone and demeanor during the news conference painted a picture that words alone might not have fully captured the longtime coach spoke warmly about ongoing communication with Kelce, suggested the tight end wants to move forward, and made clear the organization is already proceeding with that expectation in mind. For a franchise that rarely tips its hand publicly, that’s about as close to a confirmation as you’re going to get before ink hits paper.
What Reid’s words actually tell us
Reid was careful not to speak for Kelce directly, giving his veteran tight end the space to work through the decision on his own timeline. But the framing was deliberate. Reid described active communication with Kelce as the clearest indicator that both sides want to continue and said the organization is moving forward accordingly.
Multiple members of the Chiefs’ organization have privately expressed the belief that Kelce will return, which would extend one of the most productive partnerships in NFL history. Kelce himself vowed shortly after Kansas City’s season ended to have a decision made by early March, before NFL free agency officially opens. That deadline is approaching fast.
The case for one more run
Even at 36, Kelce was still the best weapon on Kansas City’s offense last season. He led the team in targets with 108, receptions with 76, receiving yards with 851, touchdowns with five, and receiving first downs with 45. Those aren’t numbers you quietly walk away from and they’re not the numbers of a player who’s run out of gas.
There’s also a reunion factor at play. The Chiefs brought back offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy last month, returning him to the same role he held from 2018 to 2022 a stretch widely considered the peak of Kelce’s career. Kelce has spoken openly and enthusiastically about Bieniemy’s coaching style on his New Heights podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, calling him one of his favorite coaches and crediting him with some of the most important developmental moments of his career. Having Bieniemy back in the building is a significant pull.
The contract question
What remains unsettled is the financial side. Kelce’s base salary last season was $4.5 million, with a roster bonus of $12.5 million. Following the regular-season finale loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, he declined to indicate whether he would accept a similar deal or consider a reduced salary for 2026. That conversation is presumably part of the ongoing dialogue Reid referenced.
Kansas City already restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract last month to generate significant cap flexibility, which signals the front office is actively positioning itself for moves including, presumably, finding a way to keep its franchise tight end around.
Mahomes grinding through rehab
The other major storyline hanging over the Chiefs’ offseason is Mahomes’ recovery from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. Reid delivered an encouraging update Friday, describing his quarterback as fully committed to the rehab process spending roughly seven hours a day at the facility working with athletic trainer Julie Frymyer.
Reid made clear the recovery isn’t easy and won’t get easier before it gets better. But Mahomes keeps showing up, which Reid identified as half the battle with injuries of this magnitude. Progress is already visible, and the organization appears confident in the trajectory.
That context matters for Kelce’s decision too. If Mahomes is on track to return healthy and the offensive infrastructure around him is being rebuilt with Bieniemy back at the helm, the case for Kelce suiting up one more time gets considerably stronger.
What happens next
The March free agency window will likely force Kelce’s hand one way or another. The Chiefs are clearly planning with him in the picture, the offensive coordinator he thrives under is back, and the team’s best player is putting in the work to return. From the outside looking in, everything is pointing in one direction.
Reid’s smile on Friday probably said more than any formal announcement will.
