Travis Kelce passes Witten for No. 2 all time and the Gonzalez target ahead

Travis Kelce passed Jason Witten to move into second place on the all-time receiving yards list for tight ends Monday night, recording three catches for 71 yards in the Chiefs’ 31-10 win over Denver and finishing with 13,073 in his career.

He entered the game needing 44 yards to surpass Witten’s total of 13,046. He reached the milestone in style, with a third-quarter catch against the Broncos’ blitz, breaking a tackle and sprinting 59 yards for the game’s longest reception to that point. He credited the blockers downfield and said he just had to find a way to get to the end zone.

After the play, his wife Taylor Swift and his brother Jason Kelce celebrated together in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium.

The record he is chasing

Kelce is now in second place behind Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, who holds the all-time mark for tight ends with 15,127 receiving yards. The gap between them is 2,054. At his career average of more than 1,000 receiving per season, he could realistically reach it within two to three seasons if he remains healthy.

Witten, the former Dallas Cowboys tight end, played 17 NFL seasons and held the record since his retirement. Kelce, now in his 14th season, has been one of the most dominant tight ends in the league’s history, reaching the Pro Bowl each of the past 13 seasons.

The career in context

He has won four Super Bowl championships with Kansas City and been a central figure in one of the most dominant dynasties in NFL history. He and Patrick Mahomes have formed one of the most productive quarterback-tight end connections in the modern era.

The 59-yard catch was a reminder that at 36, he remains capable of the kind of after-the-catch burst that separates elite pass-catchers. He broke a tackle at the line and covered the rest of the distance with speed and vision, not relying on the blitz pickup by his blockers until he was already in the open field.

Tony Gonzalez, who set the record largely with Kansas City and the Atlanta Falcons, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. His record has stood since his retirement in 2013. Whether Kelce reaches it will depend on how long he chooses to continue playing.

Kansas City’s 31-10 win over Denver was also notable for Kenneth Walker III’s 173-rushing-yard debut and Patrick Mahomes’ return from a torn ACL.
