Tyler Herro is home. The Milwaukee-area native who grew up watching the Bucks and graduated from Whitnall High School in nearby Greenfield is now wearing the uniform of the team he grew up rooting for, and he said Saturday he is trying not to let the contract uncertainty that shadows this season distract from the opportunity in front of him.
He came to Milwaukee in the trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, the organization where Herro had spent the first seven seasons of his career. He said at a youth basketball camp he was hosting that he is not worried about his contract situation, framing the season as a fresh start for him, the coaches and the entire organization. He described it as a new slate and said that burden should not be on anyone’s shoulders.
The 26-year-old has one year left on his current contract and could enter unrestricted free agency after the 2026-27 season if no extension is agreed upon. The question of whether Milwaukee will pay to keep him long-term or use this season as an audition before a decision has been a subject of ongoing discussion since the trade was finalized in June.
Coming home with a chip on his shoulder
He described entering this season with more motivation than he has felt at any point in his career, specifically because of the expectation that the Bucks will struggle without Antetokounmpo. He said the organization, the players who came over in the trade and even new coach Taylor Jenkins all share that same competitive drive in the face of low expectations.
He mentioned growing up watching the Bucks and named players from different eras of the franchise’s recent history, including T.J. Ford, Michael Redd, Andrew Bogut, Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings before Antetokounmpo arrived and defined the next chapter. He described the current group as a new generation beginning its own run.
Ford, one of the players Herro cited from his childhood memories, will be on Jenkins’ coaching staff as an assistant.
The team Herro is joining
The Bucks had a 32-50 season that ended their run of nine consecutive playoff appearances. Jenkins was hired to rebuild the franchise after the Antetokounmpo trade, inheriting a roster that has been substantially overhauled.
The trade package Milwaukee received from Miami beyond Herro included Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis and significant draft capital, including rights to 2026 No. 13 pick Nate Ament. The organization also used the No. 10 pick in this summer’s draft on Arizona shooting guard Brayden Burries.
The resulting roster is backcourt-heavy in its current construction. Herro joins a group that includes Kevin Porter Jr., who averaged 17.4 points in 38 games last season, and Ryan Rollins, who averaged 17.3 points in 74 games. Adding Herro to that group represents significant backcourt depth but also raises questions about how all of those scoring guards will fit together.
What Herro brings if healthy
His 2025-26 season was limited to 33 games by injuries, an abbreviated year that reduced his market value and contributed to the circumstances that led him to Milwaukee. When healthy, he has been among the better scoring guards in the league, averaging more than 20 points in each of the past five seasons and earning an All-Star selection in 2025.
A full healthy season in his hometown would go a long way toward establishing what he can still be at 26 and would give the Bucks a clearer picture of whether he is worth extending at a number that would keep him in Milwaukee beyond this year.
For now, Herro said he is not thinking about any of that. He said the focus is on winning as many games as possible and establishing a culture from the first day of camp. Given where the franchise is, that goal-setting is more about identity than expectation, and the new Buck appears to have accepted that framing completely.
