Victor Wembanyama and why France gave him the captaincy at 22

Victor Wembanyama was named captain of the French national basketball team on Wednesday, a formal recognition of the leadership role the 22-year-old has been stepping into throughout a summer that has included hosting Spurs teammates in France for workouts and team-building activities.

The announcement came as France prepares for FIBA World Cup European qualifiers, a campaign with significant expectations. France is considered a serious contender for gold at the 2027 World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Rudy Gobert captained the team during qualifying windows earlier this summer.

Wembanyama told FIBA he was surprised by the appointment but honored by it. He said being captain is first about setting an example through performance, knowing the systems and opponents and providing calm. He described the role as coming earlier than he had anticipated, and earlier than others probably expected, but said it did not feel rushed.

He also told French newspaper L’Equipe that international games carry a distinct weight precisely because there are so few of them. The intensity of a competition like the Olympics is compressed into just a few weeks, he said, which means every game is experienced with full presence in a way that a long NBA season does not demand.

The schedule ahead

France will play friendlies against Serbia, led by three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, on Thursday and Sunday before opening European qualifier play against Slovenia on Aug. 27. The team then travels to face Sweden on Aug. 30.

The Serbia matchups are particularly interesting as tuneups given that Jokic and Wembanyama are the two most complete players in the game at this moment, and their national teams meeting in friendlies gives the basketball world a preview of what a potential international matchup between them would look like.

Wembanyama’s growth since the Paris Olympics

Wembanyama last represented France at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the team earned a silver medal after falling to the United States in the gold-medal game. He averaged 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists over 179 minutes across the tournament.

The player returning to the French jersey this summer is meaningfully different from the one who played in Paris. Last season Wembanyama became the first unanimous winner of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, finished third in MVP voting and averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game while leading the Spurs to the NBA Finals. He is a two-time All-Star and is entering his fourth NBA season.

The captaincy formalizes what has been observable in how he has engaged with the French program and with his teammates throughout the offseason.

The weight of the French jersey

Wembanyama’s explanation to L’Equipe about what international competition means to him provided some of the clearest insight yet into his relationship with the French program. He described the rarity of international games as part of what makes them matter more rather than less, noting that an international career involves very few games and that each one really counts.

That framing is consistent with how elite players often describe international basketball, but it carries particular resonance for a player who spent his formative years in France and who represents a country with genuine ambitions at the next two major global competitions. France’s silver at the Paris Olympics established the program as a legitimate gold medal contender, and Wembanyama as captain adds the world’s most complete young player to the leadership structure.

The France roster also features Evan Fournier and Maxime Raynaud alongside Gobert.
