Why won’t Victor Wembanyama endorse sports betting? The San Antonio Spurs star says it clashes with what he wants his name to stand for. After a training camp practice Thursday, Oct. 1, reporters asked whether he would ever partner with a betting or prediction market company. He shut it down immediately and said he never will. He added that it saddens him to watch other players promote gambling, though he respects their right to choose.
He also revealed that he has walked away from far more endorsement money than he has ever accepted, turning down offers that did not fit his values. At 22, he says a star’s real power is the ability to inspire, not the paycheck. That would be a tidy ending to the story. It is not the ending.
What did Wembanyama say about betting deals?
Wembanyama said money once played a role in his business decisions, but it no longer does. He wants partners that have a positive impact and that let him share messages he believes in. His current lineup includes Nike, Louis Vuitton and Fanatics, and he is the cover athlete for NBA 2K27.
He never named a single player, and he did not need to.

Who is Wembanyama really talking about?
The list of stars with gambling ties is long. LeBron James moved from DraftKings to a Polymarket deal that Yahoo Sports reports pays him $15 million a year, more than his Philadelphia 76ers salary this season. Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the faces of Kalshi and holds a stake in the company. Kevin Durant’s Boardroom has a long partnership with FanDuel. Nikola Jokić is an ambassador for Superbet in Serbia.
All of it is legal under the league’s labor deal, as long as players do not promote betting on NBA games. Critics argue that prediction markets can look a lot like sportsbooks while operating outside the state gambling rules and consumer protections that apply to traditional betting sites.
Why are fans split on Wembanyama’s stand?
Social media did not land in one place. SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell wrote on X that critics could never make him dislike Wemby. The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov pointed out that Wembanyama is taking the opposite route from LeBron, Durant and Giannis.
Other posters on X were less impressed. Some called the comments PR. Others brought up his playoff elbow to Minnesota’s Naz Reid. One user said he lost respect for Wembanyama over how he handled losing, a reference to the Spurs walking off without handshakes after the Knicks closed out the NBA Finals in Game 5.
Look closely and those critiques target his temper, not his argument. Nobody in that thread made the case that promoting gambling is good for players.
What has betting already cost the NBA?
Plenty. Terry Rozier and Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones were arrested on federal charges tied to NBA bets. Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban. Last month, the league joined other pro sports leagues in urging action against bettors who harass and threaten players. Commissioner Adam Silver said in February that the NBA views prediction markets the same way it views sportsbooks.
For the young Black players who make up much of the league’s next wave, Wembanyama’s answer offers a public alternative to the easy money.
Can Wembanyama keep betting away from his name?
Here is the twist. He cannot.
Robinhood’s prediction market page has listed a contract on whether Wembanyama will record a quadruple double in a season, priced at a 3% chance. The fine print says naming a player in a contract does not imply any affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement by that player.
So the most principled young star in basketball can turn down every deal on the table, and people can still trade on his stat line. He controls what he sells. He does not control what gets sold about him.
That may be the strongest reason his refusal matters. When the market will use your name either way, saying no is the only part that belongs to you.
