Wembanyama puts the Spurs one win away from round two

Victor Wembanyama was at the center of it all — and it wasn’t even close. San Antonio came to Portland with a mission Sunday and left with the job nearly done, dismantling the Trail Blazers 114-93 in Game 4 of the first-round Western Conference playoff series. The Spurs closed the night on a scorching 12-3 run that put the result firmly out of reach. With the win, San Antonio now leads the series 3-1 and sits one victory away from advancing to the second round.

Wembanyama Takes Over the Moment

The 20-year-old phenom delivered what may go down as his defining postseason performance to date. Wembanyama finished with 27 points and set career highs across the board with 11 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 4 steals — a stat line that made the entire league take notice. His presence on both ends of the floor was suffocating, turning Portland’s half-court sets into a series of contested misses and miscues.

Wembanyama’s ability to impact the game without the ball was just as important as his scoring. He altered shots before they were even attempted, and his footwork on the perimeter continued to look like something that simply should not exist at 7-foot-3. For a player still in the early chapters of his career, nights like these signal something far larger on the horizon.

Fox Keeps the Pressure On

If Wembanyama was the spectacle, De’Aaron Fox was the engine. Fox led all scorers with 28 points, adding 7 assists and 6 rebounds in a complete, commanding performance. His ability to push pace and keep Portland’s defense scrambling gave Wembanyama room to operate, and the two played off each other with a chemistry that has grown sharper with each passing playoff game.

The Spurs as a unit never let Portland find rhythm. San Antonio’s defense held the Trail Blazers to a controlled offensive output, and the closing 12-3 run in the final minutes made the margin feel even more decisive than the final score suggests.

Portland’s Fight Isn’t Over — But It’s Running Out

Deni Avdija kept the Trail Blazers competitive for stretches, finishing with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. He was physical, creative, and relentless — the kind of performance that earns respect even in a loss. But Portland simply had no answer for what San Antonio brought to the floor on Sunday.

The Trail Blazers now face a must-win situation heading into Game 5, scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, in San Antonio. The series results at a glance

  • Game 1 — Spurs 111, Trail Blazers 98 (SAS leads)
  • Game 2 — Trail Blazers 106, Spurs 103 (series tied)
  • Game 3 — Spurs 120, Trail Blazers 108 (SAS leads)
  • Game 4 — Spurs 114, Trail Blazers 93 (SAS leads 3-1)

What a Series Closeout Would Mean

A Game 5 win would push San Antonio into the Western Conference Semifinals, where they would likely face the winner of the Minnesota-Denver series. Minnesota currently leads that series 3-1 as well, setting up what could be a fascinating second-round matchup.

For Wembanyama, every playoff game adds another layer to an already extraordinary story. He is not just living up to expectations — he is beginning to exceed them in ways that feel genuinely rare. The franchise that built its identity on quiet, devastating excellence may have found its next great chapter — and it’s only just beginning.

Game 5 tips off Tuesday night. Portland needs a miracle. San Antonio needs one more.
