Why is Odell Beckham Jr released by the Giants again

The New York Giants released Odell Beckham Jr on Tuesday, ending a return to the franchise that drafted him after three games in which he did not record a catch.

What were the numbers?

Nineteen snaps across three games and one target. That target came Sunday against Tennessee, a throw from Jameis Winston that was nearly intercepted. He played six snaps in that game. He had not appeared in the league since 2024, when he caught nine passes for 54 yards with Miami.

Why now?

Roster arithmetic as much as performance. The team needed a decision on Braxton Berrios, its punt returner, who had exhausted his practice squad elevations and was signed to the active roster Tuesday. Charlie Jones was also added, taking the place of Brian Burns, who went on injured reserve with a torn ACL sustained Sunday. Odell Beckham Jr was the fifth receiver on a roster that needed two spots.

Was he expected to contribute?

Yes, and recently. He made the final 53 out of camp earlier this month after being told he would have to earn the spot, with release a live possibility through the summer. Asked last week when the veteran might get more involved, the head coach said he hoped it would be that Sunday and that the timing would be ideal. It did not happen, and Beckham left the locker room quickly afterward.

What did the return mean?

Something, by the reception. Fans chanted for him in the fourth quarter against Tennessee, and there was visible nostalgia when he was introduced with the starters before the opener against Dallas. He had described the return as unfinished business with the team that drafted him twelfth overall in 2014.

What was that original run?

Extraordinary and then interrupted. Odell Beckham Jr passed 1,300 receiving yards in each of his first three professional seasons, a pace that put him among the most productive starts at the position before injuries slowed it. He was eventually traded to Cleveland and has since played for the Rams, Baltimore and Miami. His career totals stand at 575 catches for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns.

Is this the end?

Probably, though not formally. He is 33, has not produced in two seasons and is not expected to join the practice squad. A team could sign him after an injury, which is how veteran receivers at this stage usually resurface, but a player who cannot earn snaps on a roster that wanted him there has limited argument to make elsewhere.

Why do returns like this rarely work?

Because the thing being returned to no longer exists. A player comes back to a building, a fanbase and a jersey number, not to the version of himself that made those things meaningful. The affection is real and it does not translate into separation on a route. Front offices know this and sign the player anyway, because the cost is low and the goodwill is not nothing.

What is left?

A statistical record that stands on its own, and three years at the start of a career that were as good as any receiver has had. That is not diminished by how the last chapter went.
