Why Quinnen Williams and the Cowboys make it official with a record setting deal

Quinnen Williams has agreed to a three-year extension with the Dallas Cowboys worth $105.9 million, making him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles in the NFL and locking him in with the organization through the 2030 season.

The deal includes $101 million guaranteed with $63.35 million guaranteed at signing and a signing bonus of $31.85 million. The $35.3 million average annual value is the second highest among defensive tackles in the league, behind the $38 million Philadelphia’s Jalen Carter earns on his extension.

Williams, 28, was acquired by Dallas from the New York Jets at last year’s trade deadline for a second-round pick in 2026, a 2027 first-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith. The Cowboys gave up significant draft capital to get him, and the extension is the organization’s confirmation that the investment was worth it.

What Williams has done on the field

In seven games with Dallas following the trade, He was credited with 20 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 33 quarterback pressures, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup. That production was enough for the Cowboys to feel confident in building around him long-term.

For his career, the four-time Pro Bowl selection has 342 tackles, 41.5 sacks, 60 tackles for loss, 134 pressures, 15 pass breakups, eight forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. His best season came in 2022 with the Jets, when he made first-team All-Pro with a career-high 12 sacks.

The Cowboys’ executive vice president praised Williams as the best player on the practice field at any given time, a player who consistently performs without taking anything for granted. He also cited Williams as a leadership presence on a defense that has needed it, calling his arrival alongside Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary a significant improvement in defensive culture.

The market for defensive tackles

Williams is the fourth defensive tackle to sign a deal averaging more than $30 million per season, joining Carter, the Tennessee Titans’ Jeffery Simmons at $35.2 million and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Chris Jones at $31.75 million. The position has seen significant contract inflation in recent years as teams have recognized interior pass rushers as premium contributors.

The Cowboys had previously given Osa Odighizuwa a four-year, $80 million deal in March 2025, at the time the largest in franchise history for the position. Odighizuwa was subsequently traded to the San Francisco 49ers for a third-round pick. The Williams extension supersedes that previous record.

How the deal came together

At the start of training camp, the Cowboys‘ executive said the team wanted to get a long-term deal done with Williams. The player’s agent was present at Saturday’s practice, spending time with members of the front office. Two days later, the extension was agreed upon.

The Cowboys have successfully extended several core players over the past year, including guard Tyler Smith, kicker Brandon Aubrey, tight end Jake Ferguson, cornerback DaRon Bland and fullback Hunter Luepke, without the kind of extended holdout situations that have complicated other teams’ offseasons.

Williams’s previous contract had been signed with the Jets in 2023, a four-year deal worth $96 million with $66 million guaranteed, which would have kept him through 2027. The new extension replaces the remaining Jets deal with Cowboys money through 2030.
