Wilt Chamberlain jacket turned a $3 thrift find into nearly $90K

A 19-year-old vintage reseller paid $3.07 for a jacket at a Portland, Oregon Goodwill in January. Six months later, that same jacket sold at Sotheby’s for $89,600.

Quinn Brown had been combing thrift stores and reselling vintage clothing online for three years when he spotted what looked like a Los Angeles Lakers warmup jacket in a bargain bin. Something about the colors caught his eye. He pulled it out, saw the name on the back and took it home. The name said Chamberlain.

What Brown had stumbled onto was a genuine piece of Wilt Chamberlain memorabilia, one that would be authenticated, photo-matched and ultimately auctioned at one of the world’s most respected auction houses. His previous biggest resell had netted him $250. This one cleared the $89,000 mark.

How a thrift store find became a Sotheby’s lot

After getting home with the jacket, Brown searched the internet for comparable sales and found very little. He recalled having seen a Chamberlain warmup sell for five figures roughly a decade earlier and knew the item deserved closer attention. When he posted a photograph of the jacket, it reached the head of modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, who reached out directly and persuaded Brown to consign the piece for auction.

Sotheby’s then enlisted a specialized authentication service to verify the jacket and photo-match it to historical imagery. The process confirmed not only that the jacket was legitimate but that it was a historically significant piece of Lakers and Chamberlain memorabilia.

The jacket was linked to the 1971-72 NBA season and definitively matched to the 1972 NBA Finals, the championship run in which Chamberlain won the Finals MVP award. It was the Lakers’ first title in Los Angeles and his second overall. The Finals MVP distinction was particularly meaningful because the award had not existed until 1969, meaning this was his first opportunity to claim it.

The jacket was also matched to the 1972-73 season, Chamberlain’s final year as a professional. That season, he set the single-season field goal percentage record at 72.7 percent, a mark that stood for nearly five decades before finally being broken during the 2019-20 season.

Why authenticated Chamberlain items are increasingly rare

Sotheby’s noted in the lot description that photo-matched items of this kind have become exceedingly rare on the market. The Hall of Famer had played before the sports memorabilia industry had developed the documentation practices and authentication infrastructure that exist today. Items that can be definitively linked to specific games or seasons through photographic evidence carry a premium that reflects both their historical value and the diminishing likelihood of additional pieces of that material surfacing.

The combination of factors surrounding this jacket, its connection to a championship season, a Finals MVP performance and a record-setting final year, collectively made it among the more significant pieces to come to market in recent years.

A $3 find that changed everything

The story of the jacket is as much about Brown as it is about Chamberlain. At 19, he had been building a side business buying vintage clothing and flipping it online, the kind of operation that runs on patience, an eye for detail and the occasional extraordinary find. The Goodwill bargain bin was not a destination, just another stop in a routine.

Brown’s instinct to pull the jacket out of the bin, recognize what it might be and pursue authentication rather than simply reselling it quickly was what ultimately led to the auction result. Sotheby’s confirmed the details of the sale, though Brown himself was not available for comment.

For most people, a $3.07 purchase from a Goodwill bargain bin is a minor transaction forgotten by the end of the day. For Brown, it turned out to be the most consequential thing he had ever bought.
