Christian McCaffrey is the 2025 USAA Salute to Service award winner. The San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back was announced as the recipient Wednesday, beating out Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson for the prestigious honor. The award recognizes exceptional efforts by members of the NFL family to honor and support the military community a distinction that McCaffrey has earned through years of dedicated charitable work and personal commitment to veterans’ wellness.
McCaffrey will be recognized for the honor at NFL Honors on Thursday night, marking another significant acknowledgment of his off-field impact. The award carries particular meaning because it reflects a genuine commitment rather than superficial charitable involvement. McCaffrey has built a comprehensive approach to military support that goes beyond simple donations, addressing the complex needs of veterans healing from the visible and invisible wounds of service.
The foundation bearing McCaffrey’s name launched an initiative called “23 and Troops” in 2021, establishing a medically based, holistic approach designed specifically to support Special Operations forces veterans healing from post-traumatic stress. That program represents more than just funding. It represents a thoughtful understanding that military trauma requires specialized, comprehensive care not quick fixes or surface-level support.
The numbers tell the story of McCaffrey’s commitment. The Christian McCaffrey Foundation has contributed nearly $700,000 to military support efforts. That includes $250,000 to REBOOT Recovery and a recent $250,000 partnership with Resilience Code to provide veterans with a full year of personalized medical care. The foundation has also addressed immediate family needs by covering holiday layaway balances for 515 military families, recognizing that financial stress compounds the challenges veterans already face.
But McCaffrey’s involvement extends beyond financial contributions. He regularly connects with active-duty personnel, veterans, and military families directly. That personal engagement demonstrates a commitment that transcends celebrity obligation. He’s not just lending his name to charitable initiatives. He’s showing up, listening, and understanding the specific challenges service members and their families navigate.
The Platform and the Responsibility
McCaffrey articulated the philosophy driving his work when discussing the award: “This honor means a lot because it reflects the strength, sacrifice, and resilience of the men and women who serve our country. Football has given me a platform, and I believe it comes with a responsibility to serve others the right way.”
That perspective captures something essential about how McCaffrey approaches his position as an All-Pro athlete. He views his NFL platform not as a privilege to leverage for personal benefit, but as a responsibility to address meaningful needs. He understands that access access to the best care, the best recovery resources, the best medical support shouldn’t be limited to professional athletes. Service members and veterans deserve that same intentional, comprehensive care.
McCaffrey continued: “As an athlete, I’ve been fortunate to have access to the best care and recovery resources available, and I believe our service members and veterans deserve that same level of intentional support as they heal from both the visible and invisible wounds of service.”
That philosophy has guided his foundation’s work. Rather than creating generic support programs, McCaffrey’s initiatives specifically address what veterans need: specialized medical care for PTSD, comprehensive healing resources, and recognition of both visible and invisible injuries. He’s building systems designed around veteran needs rather than athlete convenience.
The Impact and the Recognition
USAA, a provider of insurance, banking, and other financial services to military members, veterans, and families, will contribute $25,000 in McCaffrey’s name to the official aid societies representing each of the military branches. The NFL Foundation will match that donation with another $25,000, which will go to McCaffrey’s military charity of choice. The combined $50,000 represents tangible commitment that extends beyond the award announcement.
This marks the second straight year a 49ers player has won the Salute to Service award, with tight end George Kittle winning last year. The continuity signals that San Francisco as an organization values military support and service. For McCaffrey specifically, the award recognizes years of dedicated work that has genuinely improved veterans’ lives from specialized medical care to family financial relief to personal connection.
The honor reflects not just what McCaffrey has accomplished, but his understanding that being an athlete comes with responsibility. He’s using his platform to address real needs, build comprehensive solutions, and ensure veterans receive the support they’ve earned through their sacrifice.
