Nearly two decades after Iron Man first suited up on the big screen, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into a sprawling catalog of 38 films, and fans are once again debating where the newest entry fits into the pecking order. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now playing in theaters, a fresh ranking of every MCU movie, from the very first to the very best, has arrived to settle the score.

The newest arrival finds a solid middle ground

Tom Holland returns for his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker in Brand New Day, joining forces with fan favorites like the Punisher and the Hulk while facing off against a mysterious new villain. The film lands at number 15 out of 38, praised for tackling the messier side of growing up, including isolation, unstable powers and friendships that no longer feel familiar. It is considered a strong, emotionally grounded chapter, even if it does not crack the franchise’s upper tier.

The films at the bottom of the pack

Not every MCU entry has aged well. Sitting at the very bottom is a 2010 sequel remembered more for introducing a sleek new hero than for its muddled villain plot. Just above it sits a 2008 origin story that was eventually overshadowed once a different actor took over the lead role. Rounding out the lower tier is a threequel that leaned too heavily on multiple armored suits and underused its central antagonist.

Fan favorites that still fall short of greatness

Several beloved installments land in the middle of the pack rather than near the top. A cosmic team up film from 2021 earned praise for its ambitious visuals but was criticized for overloading its own mythology. Around the same range sits a monster team sequel that introduced new romantic sparks between characters, even if it lacked the cohesion of the original ensemble film. A time bending threequel also lands here, buoyed largely by a standout villain performance despite a messier overall plot.

The heavy hitters near the top

Climbing toward the upper ranks are the films widely considered the franchise’s emotional high points. A 2018 ensemble battle against a universe threatening villain remains a fan favorite for its blend of humor and heartbreak. A galaxy hopping trilogy closer earns praise for centering its most overlooked character in a story about compassion. Meanwhile, a time travel heavy sequel to the original teen superhero trilogy is celebrated for tying together decades of separate film series into one satisfying send off.

The top five, according to the ranking

Cracking the top five are a genre bending war film centered on rival heroes, the original superteam movie that redefined blockbuster filmmaking, a colorful space adventure built around an eclectic cast of misfits, and an emotional three hour finale that rewards over a decade of storytelling with callbacks and cameos.

And the number one movie is…

Topping the entire list is a 2014 sequel that trades traditional superhero spectacle for a political thriller. Centered on themes of surveillance, betrayal from within and the misuse of military power, the film is frequently cited as the most timely and tightly constructed entry the franchise has ever produced, complete with one of its most talked about action sequences.

Why rankings like this keep fans talking

With dozens of films now under its belt, the MCU has built enough history that every new release forces old favorites to be reconsidered. Brand New Day‘s middle of the pack placement suggests Marvel is still capable of delivering emotionally resonant stories even decades into its run, giving audiences plenty to debate as the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.
