Apple releases OS 26.3.1 for iPhones iPads and Macs

Apple issued another software update this week, releasing OS 26.3.1 for iPhones, iPads and Macs on Wednesday ahead of the anticipated launch of two new external displays. The update arrives just days before the Studio Display (2026) and Studio Display XDR are set to go on sale, and its primary purpose is straightforward: making sure Apple devices are ready to work with the new hardware from day one.

The official release notes from Apple are brief and to the point, describing the update as one that expands external display support to include the Studio Display (2026) and the Studio Display XDR, alongside bug fixes for iPhone, iPad and Mac. There is no mention of security patches, and Apple’s own security page confirms the update carries no published CVE entries, meaning users are not being asked to update for any urgent safety-related reasons.

What the update actually adds

The headline addition is compatibility with Apple’s two new external displays, both of which are expected to arrive next week. The Studio Display (2026) is the follow-up to Apple’s existing external monitor lineup, while the Studio Display XDR represents a higher-end option for users who need more advanced display capabilities.

One functionality worth noting for iPhone owners is the ability to connect a USB-C equipped iPhone directly to a Studio Display. Doing so allows the iPhone’s screen to be mirrored on the external monitor, and it also gives the phone access to any peripherals connected to the display, such as a USB-C keyboard. It is an unconventional use case given that the Studio Display starts at $1,599, but the capability exists for those who want it.

Should you install it now?

For most users, iOS 26 Updates – is a routine maintenance update with a narrow focus on hardware compatibility. If you are not planning to purchase one of the new Studio Displays at launch, there is no urgent reason to install it immediately, though Apple generally recommends keeping devices up to date for overall performance and stability. Users who do intend to pick up one of the new displays next week will want to make sure this update is installed before connecting their new monitor for the first time.

The update is available now for all compatible iPhone, iPads and Macs and can be installed through the Software Update section in Settings on iPhone and iPad or System Settings on Mac.
