The full cast includes Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Kristen Bell, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade. Director Jeff Fowler, who helmed all three previous films, is back behind the camera.
Among the new additions, Kingsley and Offerman will contribute voice performances, though the characters they will play have not been announced. Ayoade and Berry round out the newcomers, with their roles also undisclosed.
A Parks and Recreation reunion nobody asked for but everyone needed
Offerman’s casting adds an unexpected layer of nostalgia for fans of ‘Parks and Recreation.’ Both Offerman, who played the deadpan Ron Swanson, and Schwartz, who played the irrepressible Jean-Ralphio Saperstein, shared the ensemble NBC sitcom for years. Bell also had a recurring role on the show, making this something of an unofficial reunion wrapped inside a CGI hedgehog movie.
Bell’s role, unlike the others, has been confirmed. She will voice Amy Rose, the pink hedgehog with a well-documented crush on Sonic, who appeared in the post-credits scene of the third film.
Returning cast brings the franchise’s core intact
The familiar pillars of the Sonic universe are all back. Elba returns as Knuckles, O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Reeves as the brooding Shadow. Marsden and Sumpter reprise their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Sonic’s human adoptive family. Majdoub also returns as Agent Stone.
Carrey’s return as Dr. Robotnik is perhaps the most noteworthy piece of continuity. The actor told a television program in 2022 that he was stepping away from acting entirely, a statement he has since walked back twice. He returned for the third film, where he acknowledged the financial appeal of the franchise, and is now confirmed for a fourth. His character’s fate was left deliberately unclear at the end of the previous installment.
A teaser points toward Metal Sonic
An official title reveal video accompanied the cast announcement, featuring an orchestral arrangement of the Sonic CD theme ‘Sonic Boom’ playing over footage of returning characters. The clip places notable emphasis on Bell’s Amy Rose and her signature hammer, and the imagery strongly hints that Metal Sonic will serve as the primary antagonist.
Whether Metal Sonic will be a speaking role remains unknown, but the possibility has fueled speculation about which of the newly announced cast members might be voicing the character.
A billion-dollar franchise with no signs of slowing
The Sonic film series has now grossed a collective $1 billion at the global box office across its first three entries. The third installment was the highest-performing of the group, pulling in nearly $500 million worldwide. That trajectory makes the franchise one of Paramount’s most reliable properties, and the studio is clearly treating it accordingly.
The spinoff series ‘Knuckles’ has also expanded the universe on Paramount+, and a separate untitled Sonic Universe Event Film is already dated for December 22, 2028, suggesting the studio sees the franchise as a long-term platform rather than a film series with a natural endpoint.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 opens in theaters on March 19, 2027.
