Nicki Minaj and Trump share another public moment as she joins the Correspondents’ dinner

The relationship between Nicki Minaj and President Donald Trump is showing no signs of cooling. The rapper is reportedly set to attend the White House Correspondents’ dinner on April 26, marking her most prominent appearance yet within Washington’s political social calendar.

The event also represents a notable milestone for Trump, who is expected to attend the dinner for the first time after skipping it during his first term and again the previous year. The two appearing at the same event in this setting would be the clearest public signal yet that what began as an online exchange has solidified into something more intentional.

How the alliance between Nicki Minaj and Trump took shape

The relationship between the Trinidad-born artist and the Trump administration developed gradually over recent months, beginning when Minaj publicly praised the president online in November for his stated position on the treatment of Christians in Nigeria. That claim drew scrutiny, with reporting suggesting that both Christian and Muslim communities in the country have faced violence from various groups with differing motivations.

Despite the contested nature of the issue, the exchange opened a door. Trump invited Minaj to speak at the United Nations alongside the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, and she accepted. From that point, her presence at events tied to Trump and his political orbit became increasingly regular.

She appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, sharing a stage at an event connected to the conservative organization. She attended a U.S. Treasury event where she was presented with a Trump Gold Card, a program designed to accelerate residency paperwork for qualifying applicants. Each appearance moved her further into territory that had previously seemed unlikely for an artist who had once taken public positions at odds with the policies the Trump administration champions.

A vocal presence beyond the events themselves

Minaj’s alignment with Trump has not been limited to physical appearances. She has been an active voice online, defending the administration and going after its critics directly. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been a frequent target, with Minaj using dismissive nicknames for him in posts on social media. She also directed criticism at independent journalist Don Lemon, using a homophobic slur while responding to his coverage of an anti-immigration enforcement protest in Minnesota, where demonstrators had gathered at a church.

The incidents drew significant backlash, including from other public figures and fellow entertainers, adding a layer of controversy to what had already become a divisive public pivot.

Trump, for his part, has spoken warmly about Minaj in public settings, describing her in flattering terms and suggesting she understands something that others in her industry do not.

A shift that has not gone unnoticed

For those who have followed Minaj’s public positions over the years, the transformation has been striking. She was not previously regarded as a supporter of the policies or political figures now central to her public image. The shift has prompted substantial conversation about her motivations, the nature of her relationship with the administration, and what it signals about the broader landscape of celebrity and political alignment in the current moment.

Her expected presence at the Correspondents‘ dinner, one of Washington’s most visible annual gatherings of media, politics, and celebrity, suggests the alliance is far from over.
