Defending a championship was supposed to be the only storyline in New York this fall. Instead, contract talk has pushed its way to the center of the conversation.

Karl-Anthony Towns says he was caught off guard and very disappointed by the New York Knicks’ decision to shelve extension negotiations until later in the season.

Why did the Knicks pause extension talks?

The team announced Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, that it would stop negotiating contract extensions so it could focus entirely on preparing for the new season. The organization said it wanted to deliver another year its fans could be proud of.

The rare public statement came after Karl-Anthony Towns spoke about his contract situation twice during the preseason. He has been the most vocal player on the roster since training camp opened.

Towns said after practice on Sunday that the announcement was news to him. He acknowledged that contracts are business, but he stressed that the team has business of its own to handle on the court.

His comments marked the latest awkward moment between the franchise and several of its key players since the statement went out.

How far apart are Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks?

The gap is large. Karl-Anthony Towns is eligible for an extension worth as much as $276 million, but the two sides have reached a stalemate.

The Knicks have reportedly offered about $200 million over four years. Team ownership has said it will not let the payroll climb into the second salary cap apron, the most restrictive tier under the league’s labor deal, which restricts trades and signings.

Towns also holds a player option worth $61 million for next season. If talks resume during the year, he would have to decline that option to sign a new deal. He said he had not thought that far ahead because he never expected things to reach this point.

What did Karl-Anthony Towns mean to the title run?

Plenty. Towns was a driving force as the Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years last season.

He made the All-Star team for the sixth time and averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists in the playoffs. That production makes the current standoff all the more uncomfortable.

Which other Knicks are waiting on new deals?

Towns is not alone. Swingman Josh Hart is eligible for an extension, though the team holds an option on his contract for next season. Reserves Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek are also eligible for new contracts this season.

The financial squeeze has already cost New York depth. Backup center Mitchell Robinson left for the Boston Celtics this summer on a deal starting at $15 million. The Knicks replaced him by signing veteran Andre Drummond for the league minimum of $2.4 million.

All of those moves trace back to the same priority of staying below the second apron. That approach keeps the team clear of the league’s most severe roster restrictions, but it also limits how much money is available to keep a championship core together.

How is Karl-Anthony Towns handling the uncertainty?

For now, he says the focus belongs on basketball. Karl-Anthony Towns admitted that everyone has human feelings, but he insisted his mindset has not changed since the title.

His only goal, he said, is figuring out how to win another title and keep the trophy in New York beyond a single summer. He also looked forward to the team’s next preseason game on Monday.

Whether that focus holds while his future remains unsettled could shape the Knicks’ title defense. For Karl-Anthony Towns, the wait for a resolution may stretch deep into the season.
