Several counties in central North Carolina faced tornado warnings Sunday, Oct. 11, as warm, humid conditions associated with the remnants of Isaias moved through the state.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch covering central North Carolina through 5 p.m., alerting residents to the potential for tornadoes as storms developed across the region. The CBS 17 Storm Team had designated Sunday a Weather Alert Day because of the threat of severe weather associated with a warm front linked to the weather system.

Multiple tornado warnings were issued throughout the morning and early afternoon, including alerts for portions of Harnett, Johnston, Wake, Chatham, Durham, Lee and Moore counties. Some warnings were allowed to expire, while others were canceled before their scheduled end times.

Tornado warnings affect multiple counties

Around 12:50 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for northeastern Harnett County and southwestern Johnston County. The alert was scheduled to remain in effect until 1:15 p.m.

Another warning was issued for northwestern Wake County, northeastern Chatham County and southeastern Durham County, initially remaining in effect until 1 p.m. The warning area was later expanded to include northeastern Lee County, southwestern Wake County and southeastern Chatham County.

The alerts placed residents in the affected areas on notice as forecasters monitored changing weather conditions.

Earlier Sunday, a tornado warning was issued for southwestern Chatham County, with the alert scheduled to expire at 10:45 a.m. That warning subsequently expired.

Western Moore County also came under a tornado warning around the same time. The alert was initially set to remain in effect until 11 a.m. but was canceled shortly before 10:30 a.m.

The sequence of warnings reflected the evolving nature of Sunday’s weather, with alerts issued for specific areas as storm conditions developed.

Tornado watch covers central North Carolina

The National Weather Service issued the broader tornado watch shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday. The watch covered central North Carolina, along with areas to the east and west, and was scheduled to remain in effect until 5 p.m.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornado development. It does not mean a tornado has been confirmed or that one will necessarily occur in every location under the watch.

A tornado warning is more urgent. It means a tornado has been detected or indicated by weather radar, or that the National Weather Service has other evidence warranting immediate protective action in the affected area.

Residents in locations covered by warnings are encouraged to seek shelter promptly and follow official weather service instructions.

The CBS 17 Storm Team’s Weather Alert Day designation also reflected the potential for strong storms associated with the system moving across North Carolina.

Severe thunderstorm warning expires

The region also experienced a separate severe thunderstorm warning earlier Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, that warning expired at 11:45 a.m. and covered southern Orange County, northern Harnett County, Lee County, western Wake County, Chatham County and southern Durham County.

Although the warning ended, the broader threat of unsettled weather remained a concern as the tornado watch continued.

The remnants of Isaias were associated with the warm and humid conditions moving through the state. Such an environment can contribute to storm development, although the exact hazards and intensity can vary by location.

Residents were advised to monitor changing conditions and remain attentive to official alerts throughout the afternoon.

Separate warning expires in South Carolina

Severe weather alerts were also reported in neighboring South Carolina on Sunday.

A tornado warning had been issued for Horry, Marion, Dillon and Robeson counties. The warning for Horry County expired at approximately 12:10 p.m.

At the time of that report, Horry County spokesperson Thomas Bell had not received any reports of damage. He indicated that additional information would be shared if the situation changed.

The South Carolina alert was separate from the warnings issued across central North Carolina, but it underscored the broader reach of Sunday’s unsettled weather.

Residents urged to monitor weather updates

With the tornado watch scheduled to continue through 5 p.m. Sunday, residents across central North Carolina were encouraged to keep track of updated forecasts and any new warnings issued for their communities.

Weather alerts can change quickly as storms move, making it important to check the latest information from the National Weather Service and local emergency officials.

People in areas under an active tornado warning should move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. Those without access to a basement should seek shelter in a small, enclosed interior space and protect their heads.

Residents should also keep weather notifications enabled and avoid relying on outdated alert information, particularly when warnings are issued for neighboring counties.

The timing and coverage of Sunday’s warnings varied by location, and the expiration or cancellation of one alert did not mean the entire region was clear of potential weather hazards.
