Verizon will charge $10 a month for iPhone Handoff, the new iOS 27 feature that lets one phone number work across two compatible iPhones, such as the new iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro. That’s double the $5 T-Mobile charges. Only one iPhone can use the number at a time, and Verizon says support is coming soon. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, opened for preorder Oct. 16 and hits stores Oct. 23.
A $5 gap sounds small. Stretched across Verizon’s own iPhone Duo payment plan, it starts to look like a real bill.
What is iPhone Handoff?
iPhone Handoff lets you switch your phone number between a main iPhone and a second one whenever you want. The pitch is simple. Carry the pocket-friendly iPhone Duo, which folds down to a 5.4 inch screen, when you’re out, then switch to an iPhone 18 Pro for work. Apple says the number is active on only one iPhone at a time, and carriers may charge to enroll.
There’s a reason this feature exists. The iPhone Duo uses eSIM only, so there’s no physical SIM card to pop out and slide into another phone. Handoff is how you move your number now, and carriers are deciding what that convenience is worth.
How much does iPhone Handoff cost at each carrier?
It depends on where you are. T-Mobile already offers it for $5 a month plus taxes and fees, for eligible postpaid accounts. Verizon announced its $10 price on Oct. 16 but hasn’t given a start date. AT&T recently signaled it has no immediate plans to support it, according to MacRumors.
Overseas carriers are taking a different approach. In the U.K., EE includes Handoff free on its top Full Works Plus plan and charges £5 a month for everyone else. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom charges €6.95 a month but includes it free on its two highest MagentaMobil plans.
What does a two iPhone setup really cost on Verizon?
Here’s the math most coverage skipped. Verizon’s switcher deal puts the iPhone Duo at $72 a month over 48 months, which breaks down to $42 for the phone and $30 for its Simplicity plan. Add Handoff, and it’s $82 a month.
Over those same 48 months, Handoff alone would cost $480 at Verizon’s rate, compared with $240 at T-Mobile’s, before taxes and fees. That’s on top of the second iPhone itself, which might carry its own payments. And Verizon’s bill credits are spread over 36 months, so leaving early means losing the credits you haven’t received yet.
Why are iPhone users frustrated with the fee?
Many longtime users remember when you could move your number by simply swapping a SIM card between phones for free. Commenters on MacRumors called the charge a fee for something people used to do themselves, and pointed out that Verizon is asking twice what T-Mobile charges. With the Duo going eSIM only, that free option is gone, and Handoff is the convenient replacement.
Can you even get an iPhone Duo right now?
That’s the twist. Supply is tight. Apple reportedly raised iPhone Duo orders by 30%, but total supply for 2026 is still expected to stay under 10 million units. MacRumors reported that delivery dates for new orders have slipped into 2027, with Apple calling demand extraordinary.
For a lot of buyers, the Duo may arrive after Verizon’s Handoff goes live, giving them time to decide. And the real question isn’t whether $10 is fair. It’s whether carrying two iPhones is worth adding a whole new line to your monthly budget.
