A second Gary outage reopens wounds from August’s 16 day blackout

For families still recovering from August, the timing made this outage feel like a repeat of the same crisis.

Residents in Gary, Indiana lost power again this week, just days after finally getting electricity restored following a devastating storm the previous month, reigniting frustration over how the region’s utility has handled both the original disaster and its aftermath.

A community already worn down by August’s storm

The trouble started on August 11, when winds reaching 99 miles per hour tore through Northwest Indiana and knocked out power to more than 370,000 NIPSCO customers. Some Gary residents went 15 to 16 days without electricity before service returned, and NIPSCO reported the vast majority of customers restored by August 27, even as cleanup and recovery work continued well beyond that point.

Then the lights went out again

By Thursday evening, September 3, more than 1,800 NIPSCO customers across Northwest Indiana were without power, including more than 1,300 in Gary specifically, with the outage peaking at roughly 2,300 customers before crews began making progress. The cause of this second outage was not immediately known. NIPSCO said crews arrived on site quickly and were working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible, thanking residents for their patience while repairs continued.

What this outage actually cost one family

For residents who had only just gotten their power back, the timing made the new outage feel less like a separate event and more like a continuation of the same ordeal. Gary resident Aja Hall, who documented her experience through the August outage on social media, said her electricity had been restored after roughly two weeks, only for it to go out again about a week later. In a video posted online, she described the moment as being back in the dark and said she was dealing with real exhaustion from the repeated disruption. Hall had recently used a 300 dollar voucher, provided to residents affected by the original outage, to buy groceries including chicken, and said she now feared losing that food to spoilage all over again. She also showed the emergency supplies her family had assembled after the first outage, including candles, batteries, flashlights, a radio and a portable power bank, saying the preparation at least left them more ready this time, even if it did nothing to ease the underlying frustration. She described herself as a single mother and said she was considering whether to leave Gary altogether. Another Gary resident, who shared her experience on TikTok, said she had also gone 15 days without power during the August outage and was now sitting through a second outage in her own building.

Demands for accountability are growing

The repeat outage has intensified calls for answers that were already building after August’s storm. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton and Indiana Governor Mike Braun have both called for an investigation into how NIPSCO handled the original blackout, and a class action lawsuit has since been filed against the utility over its vegetation management and storm preparation practices. Residents have specifically questioned whether NIPSCO did enough to maintain power lines and clear trees ahead of the August storm, a question that carries new weight now that a second, smaller outage has hit some of the same neighborhoods within weeks of the first.

What residents are watching for now

Beyond the immediate inconvenience, the back to back outages have left residents wondering whether the region’s power infrastructure, and NIPSCO’s response systems, are actually prepared for the next major storm, a concern sharpened by the ongoing heat affecting much of the country this summer. For families who spent their emergency savings and vouchers recovering from the first outage, a second one so soon has made preparedness feel less like a solution and more like a new normal they did not choose.
