Carson Beck and the calm that veterans twice his age would envy

Carson Beck did not know he was going to start Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers until this week, and even then, the Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback says he is not nervous about it.

Beck will get the nod for the Cardinals in Canton, Ohio, after the team elected to rest both its regular-season starter Jacoby Brissett and backup Gardner Minshew in what amounts to a preseason exhibition. For a third-round pick still finding his footing in an NFL training camp, the surprise assignment could have been unsettling. It was not, at least according to Beck.

He said the last time he genuinely felt nervous before a game was approximately 15 years ago, before a Pop Warner city championship game when he was 8 years old. He described playing football as something he loves, and said the emotion heading into Thursday is excitement rather than anxiety.

What success looks like for a rookie starter

The Cardinals’ offensive coordinator made clear that the result of the game is not the primary measure of Beck’s showing. What the coaching staff will be watching is whether Beck can run the offense cleanly at the most fundamental level. He wants to see Beck comfortable calling plays, getting players aligned quickly, executing proper cadences, and making smart, sound decisions with the football.

He laid out a similar definition. He described success as the offense operating with cohesion, as his eyes finding the right spots, his reads completing efficiently, and as the unit getting in and out of the huddle with precision. The chemistry between a new quarterback and his teammates is still being built during training camp, and a preseason snap count is a meaningful opportunity to develop it in a game environment.

The Hall of Fame Game is the first of four preseason contests Arizona will play, and it also happens to be the only nationally televised game on the Cardinals’ schedule this season, which adds a layer of visibility to what is otherwise a low-stakes evening.

The adjustment from college to the NFL

Beck played under Kirby Smart at Georgia and Mario Cristobal at Miami, both of whom built their coaching philosophies within the Nick Saban tradition. He described both fall camps under those coaches as genuinely grueling experiences, and said the structure and intensity of the Cardinals’ training camp has felt familiar as a result. Having come from programs that treated preseason preparation with that level of rigor, Beck said, made the NFL camp environment less of a shock than it might have been otherwise.

The game itself is a different matter. He said the gap between college and professional football is complete, describing the difference as 100 percent, even while acknowledging that the conceptual framework of the position carries over. The concepts look similar, he explained, but are different in ways that reveal themselves in real time.

A process-oriented rookie

Beck’s approach to training camp has been deliberate about the difference between camp and regular-season execution. He described using the preseason period as a time for trial and error, where taking calculated risks in practice can provide information that a more conservative approach would never generate.

He gave a specific example involving zone coverage. In a regular-season game, he said, his instinct when a defense drops into zone would be to check down and protect the possession. In camp, he might attempt the more difficult throw anyway, even knowing it could result in an interception, because the only way to know if the throw is possible is to try it.

That philosophy reflects the thinking of a player who is comfortable with imperfection during the learning phase of his career, and who understands that the mistakes made now are preferable to discovering limitations during games that count.

Thursday’s start is his first opportunity to apply those lessons in a game setting.
