A shooting near Seapark Apartments left eight people wounded, including four children, just an hour after a Fourth of July fireworks display.

A festive Fourth of July night in Brooklyn turned violent late Saturday when gunfire erupted in Coney Island, leaving eight people wounded, four of them children.

Gunfire follows a night of fireworks

Police say the shooting happened around 10.37 p.m. on the 2900 block of West 31st Street, near the Seapark Apartments, roughly an hour after a fireworks display in the area marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. The New York Police Department said officers responded to reports of multiple people shot and found eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.

Emergency crews transported all eight to nearby hospitals. Seven were listed in stable condition. A 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest, according to police.

Children among the wounded

The victims ranged in age from 6 to 37, a span that includes four young children caught in the gunfire. Reports on the incident have described injuries among the youngest victims as involving gunshot wounds to the torso and legs, underscoring how close the violence came to some of the neighborhood’s most vulnerable residents.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene, though as of Sunday morning no arrests had been made. Detectives are continuing to investigate and have not identified a motive or named any suspects. The area around the shooting site remained cordoned off as the investigation continued.

A community searching for answers

News of the shooting spread quickly, arriving just hours after the neighborhood had gathered to watch fireworks celebrating the country’s founding. That contrast, a public celebration followed so soon by gunfire in the same stretch of the neighborhood, has left residents unsettled and searching for explanations that authorities have not yet provided.

Community members have voiced concern about safety in the area following the shooting, particularly given how many children were injured. Advocates have pointed to the incident as part of a broader pattern of gun violence that continues to affect neighborhoods across the country, often disrupting family gatherings and public events meant to bring people together.

The NYPD has said the investigation remains active, and officials are expected to release more information as it develops. For now, the case remains open, with police still working to determine what set off the burst of violence and who was responsible.

This is a developing story, and details may change as authorities release further updates.
