An Airbnb guest in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., shot an 18 year old who police say was attempting to enter the rental property with another man.
The incident happened Thursday, Sept. 24, at approximately 6 p.m., when officers with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department responded to a report involving two armed men at an Airbnb.
When officers arrived, they found 18 year old Dareon Pubien suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Police said the teenager had been involved in an attempted break-in at the property before the renter fired at him.
Pubien left the area on foot following the shooting. Officers later located him near the residence, where he was bleeding from his injuries.
Teen remains hospitalized after surgery
Pubien was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. He underwent surgery and remained in critical but stable condition.
Police said Pubien faces charges of attempted murder and home invasion with a firearm in connection with the incident.
Authorities have not publicly identified the Airbnb renter who fired the weapon.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. CBS Miami reported that investigators are treating the shooting as a possible case of self defense.
According to police, two armed men entered the rental property before a confrontation took place inside. The renter then shot Pubien, striking him in the chest.
Second suspect arrested in Fort Lauderdale
Investigators also identified another person they say was involved in the incident.
Sean Thompson, 25, was arrested and faces the same charges as Pubien.
Thompson appeared in court on Friday, Sept. 25. A judge ordered that he remain in jail without bond while the case moves forward.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish the events that led to the shooting and determine what happened inside and around the rental property.
Neighbors describe hearing gunfire
The incident drew attention in the surrounding Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, where a resident told local news outlets that he heard numerous gunshots coming from the property.
Arthur Butler Jr. told CBS Miami that he heard what sounded like at least 10 shots during the incident. He described hearing gunfire begin inside the house before continuing outside.
Butler also told NBC 6 South Florida that he saw people moving around the property after the shooting but did not know what had prompted the commotion.
Police remained at the scene while investigators examined the property and gathered information about what happened.
The identity of the Airbnb renter has not been released publicly, and authorities have not announced whether that person will face any charges.
What happens next
Pubien remains hospitalized as he recovers from his injuries, while Thompson remains in custody following his court appearance.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted entry and subsequent shooting. Investigators will also determine how the available evidence fits with the self defense aspect of the case.
