Dolly Parton airport bid gains support after her death

Her own reaction to the petition resurfaced right as Tennessee moved to act

Dolly Parton dismissed the idea of Nashville’s airport carrying her name back when the petition first appeared in January 2025, telling an interviewer she took it as more of a joke than anything real. That old comment is circulating again this week for an uncomfortable reason. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and airport officials announced Friday that they intend to do exactly what Parton once waved off, renaming Nashville International Airport in her honor, three days after her death at 80.

Why is a two-year-old petition suddenly moving?

Nashville comedian Lydia Popovich and photographer Dan Dion started the Change.org petition in January 2025 as a lighthearted tribute, and it sat for months without urgency. Parton herself told a local paper at the time that she was flattered but doubted anybody was serious about it. Her death changed that math almost overnight. Signatures jumped from roughly 50,000 to more than 155,000 in days, and elected officials who had stayed quiet for a year and a half suddenly started responding directly on the petition page.

Who actually has to approve this?

Not the governor alone. The Metro Nashville Airport Authority controls the airport’s name, and its internal policy requires honorees to have been dead for at least two years or to have a direct tie to aviation or a major gift to the airport itself. Parton meets neither condition yet, which is why the proposal is headed to a board meeting on September 17 rather than an immediate name change. State Rep. Todd Warner has already pledged to file legislation pushing the rename through regardless, and Nashville council member Russ Bradford said he’s sponsoring a resolution asking the authority to take it up.

Does geography actually favor Nashville over Knoxville?

It does, and this part rarely gets mentioned. Parton grew up in Locust Ridge, a stretch of East Tennessee sitting far closer to Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport than to anything in Nashville. McGhee Tyson can’t easily take her name because of a decades-old agreement tied to Tyson Park. That technicality is part of why Nashville, where Parton built her actual career starting in 1964, became the realistic option once state leaders lined up behind it.

What has the response looked like beyond politics?

A plane towed a banner over Nashville pointing people toward the petition, and fellow country artist Sheryl Crow attached her name to the campaign early. Warner, who tried and failed to get a different building named for a political figure last year, said plainly that America needs more people like Parton. The renewed attention has also pulled focus back to her Imagination Library, which has mailed more than 100 million free books to children since 1995 and received a $2 million donation from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce earlier this year.

For now, the name on the terminal signs hasn’t changed, and the two-year rule Parton never anticipated is still sitting on the books. What has changed is that the woman who once called this whole idea a joke is no longer here to wave it off a second time, and Tennessee’s political class appears determined not to let that stop them.
